Citrulline- Chemical Corner 101
If you haven’t noticed, practically every pre-workout or nitric oxide product on the market contains some form of arginine. There is no doubt arginine has some use in sport supplements but unfortunately some companies grossly under-dose it in their products so you don’t get any real benefit from it.. Citrulline was brought to my attention and I was quick to learn that it had many benefits over old school arginine. First off, Citrulline actually increases arginine levels higher in the body than normal arginine does. The reason is, normal oral arginine gets degraded to a high degree so it actually makes an inefficient ingredient to increase nitric oxide in healthy athletes. Oral citrulline is shown to increase markers for enhanced nitric oxide levels in healthy men (*). Secondly, citrulline actually assists in ammonia metabolism. Ammonia is responsible in part for exercise induced fatigue and even sometimes muscle failure in athletes so by eliminating from the body while exercising can help endurance levels (*).
