First Boxer, Now Cover Girl – Mary Spencer

Windsor boxer and Olympic hopeful Mary Spencer is also a CoverGirl.

Procter & Gamble Canada, in cooperation with the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC), announced the sponsorship earlier this week.

“They contacted me a year ago out of nowhere. It’s not anything I would have expected or imagined,” Spencer said.

Spencer is the reigning Canadian women’s boxing champion. As part of the sponsorship, the 27-year-old will serve as an ambassador for the popular makeup and skin care line.

She will participate in various marketing campaigns, including advertising, in-store promotions, public relations and digital and social media.

She’s already filmed one TV commercial but isn’t sure what the company has planned next for her.

“They have all these plans I’m not asking about. I just kind of go with the flow,” Spencer said.

Spencer is a gold medal favourite for female boxing, which will be included in the Olympic Games for the first time this year.

She’s currently ranked No. 1 in Canada and the world.

Spencer has dominated the sport, having won three Women’s World Championships, eight Canadian Championships and five gold medals at the Pan-American Games.

She doesn’t wear makeup in the ring, but Spencer said with a laugh that she does use cover-up to hide the occasional bruise.

In a media release, CoverGirl and Procter & Gamble representatives said they are “proud to support Mary Spencer to help celebrate the power and strength in beauty.”
