Anthony Pettis

TRAINING: I train hard every day and get better every day. I’m really focused on my conditioning for this fight.

When and why did you start training for fighting? I have been doing martial arts my whole life since the age of five. My father would push me to train hard everyday.  On November 12, 2003 he was killed in a house robbery.  I knew from that day I would make him proud and become a professional fighter.

What ranks and titles have you held? WEC lightweight champion, Gladiators Fighting Lightweight Champion.  3rd Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do.

Do you have any heroes? My dad, he was killed in a house robbery in 2003 and I still use many of the life lessons he taught me.

What is your favorite technique? I am a very flashy fighter so I like any technique that makes the audience go crazy.

What does it mean for you to fight in the UFC? This is a dream come true. I dedicated my life to making it where I am at and I’m very excited for a long career in the UFC.

Did you go to college and if so what degree did you earn? Yes, I went to the fire academy.

What was your job before you started fighting? P.O.C Fire Fighter and Martial Arts Instructor

•    A fast-rising and charismatic star, won WEC lightweight title before organization merged with UFC at end of 2010

•    Renowned for delivering the most famous and breathtaking high kick in the history of the sport – in which Pettis went airborne, bounced off the cage on one foot and landed a beautiful high kick on the face of Benson Henderson late in the fifth round of their Dec. 2010 title fight. Trainer Duke Roufus said it is technically an “Ong Bak” kick, while others have referred to the highlight reel kick with comparisons to the “The Matrix” and being a “Ninja” kick

•    Carried the WEC belt to the grave of his father, Eugene, who was murdered during an armed robbery in 2003. Pettis draws motivation from his father’s memory, and often wears a hooded sweatshirt with an image of his father during his walk toward the Octagon

•    Subject of a documentary on MTV’s “World of Jenks” in 2010

•    Coach Duke Roufus compares his potential to UFC champ Georges St. Pierre

•    Bold and Courageous: Was slated to face winner of bout between UFC lightweight champ Frankie Edgar-Gray Maynard I but after they dueled to a draw, Pettis opted not to wait around longer on the shelf and courageously asked the UFC for another fight (risking his title shot).

•    Is a third-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do

•    Like Urijah Faber and GSP, seems to be a particular favorite of female fight fans

•    Ancestry: Mix of Puerto Rican and Mexican
