Alan Belcher

TRAINING: Every day is different and every day is hard. One thing that has changed is that I’m wrestling with Olympian Ben Askren every single training day for this fight!

When and why did you start training for fighting? I was in martial arts as a kid and I got lucky that I got involved with people who weren’t teaching just traditional boxing or karate.  I was 15 when I first fought in amateur MMA, and around that time the sport was dying out so I focused on playing football, baseball, and basketball in high school, and baseball at junior college.  Then the sport started taking off again and the baseball didn’t work out, so I started picking up MMA again.  I fought in a few fights and then hooked up with Rich (Clementi) and moved to the coast to train with him and fight for him full-time.

What ranks and titles have you held?
EFL light heavyweight champion, Brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Helio Soneca.

Do you have any heroes?
I’ve got a lot of respect for Rich Franklin.  And one fighter I really like is Takanori Gomi. You can tell that his mind is nowhere except on what he needs to be doing.  He’s trying for perfection the whole time.

What is your favorite technique?
Whatever ends the fight.

What does it mean for you to fight in the UFC? It’s a lifetime dream.

The Power of Protein   Protein has been identified in numerous scientific studies to help you fight unhealthy body fat gain and stay young and vital (Anderson GH, 2004, Clifton PM et al, 2008).   High protein foods like free-range organic eggs, turkey, salmon, tuna, and beef are great for keeping you feeling full, without [...]

Rest Periods & Failure: Intensity Is Everything

Rest Periods & Failure: Intensity Is Everything

Rest Periods Rest periods between sets are something that most bodybuilders rarely change. As with rep ranges and the number of sets used during training, most lifters find what they like best and tend to stay within that comfort zone. Rest periods are yet another tool that can be used to raise the intensity of [...]

An athlete’s guide to the week leading up to a competition

So you have trained for weeks, months, even years and the big day is finally here. Are you ready? Just as important as your training was, will be your food intake leading up to the actual competition day. You could throw off all of your hard efforts by un-educated meal decisions of high fatty foods [...]

TRAINING: Two sessions a day, six days a week, mixing technical sessions with strength and conditioning. Lots of sparring and live situation drills, padwork and grappling. When and why did you start training for fighting? I decided to train for competitive fighting back in 2002 after 14 years of traditional martial arts. The truth is, though, [...]

Blast Your Triceps!

Blast Your Triceps!

The best way to get a full and well defined tricep is not with your dumbbell but instead with your Swiss ball (exercise ball). Get down on the floor and assume a standard pushup position, with your hands resting on top of the ball.  While keeping your hands planted, slowly roll your wrists onto the [...]
