Phil Heath

Phil Heath is a professional bodybuilder from Denver, Colorado. Before he became a bodybuilder, he played on the men’s basketball team at the University of Denver. Through his experiences as a college athlete, he learned the importance of hard work ethics and humility.

After his college basketball career was over, he began training with bodybuilders. He explains that he never thought of himself “as a bodybuilder”, but did see himself quite “muscular” for a basketball player. So he decided to give bodybuilding a try. Heath began changing his entire workout regime, and found the “discipline” and “hard work” between basketball and bodybuilding to be similar.

In 2003, he won the men’s overall title at his first contest, the NPC in Northern Colorado. He started his training at 185 pounds and worked himself up to 215, with 6% body fat. He worked hard and continued to compete over the next year, and in 2004, signed with Weilder Health and Fitness. He credits much of his success to his mentors, Jay Cutler and Peter McGough.

Phil Heath ended up winning the USA contest where he became an IFBB Pro. Since then, he has gone on to win numerous, prestigious titles, including:

  • 2004 – Colorado State: First Men’s Heavyweight and Overall Champion
  • 2005 – NPC USA: First Men’s Heavyweight and Overall Champion
  • 2006 – IFBB Colorado Pro Show: First
  • 2006 – IFBB NY Pro: First
  • 2007 – Arnold Classic: Fifth
  • 2008 – Ironman Pro: First
  • 2008 – Mr. Olympia: Third
  • 2008 – Arnold Classic: Runner up
  • 2009 – Mr. Olympia: Fifth
  • 2010 – Arnold Classic: Second
