Postby Jazi » Thu May 03, 2012 8:28 pm

I'm 6'4 205 lbs ~15% bf atm and I've been trying to learn how to do a handstand (just for kicks) and I'm getting better but I've been getting minor injuries in my wrists/forearms/elbows. What do?

also any miscers here?

Lose weight fatty. Jkjk but you should probably stop if you're getting injured from it. Orr you could work up to what you're doing now.

Is it helpful with anything?

Your joints might not be able to support handstands, causing pain in your wrists and elbows. You could strengthen your wrists and your forearms, but I wouldn't recommend doing handstands if it is causing injury. Taller people tend to have smaller joints, not good for supporting heavy loads. However, I might be totally wrong and your body could adapt to the new stress if you are new to handstands.

My friend has this problem right now, but it goes away and comes back. Straight bar curls seem to aggravate the worse. He talked to a physical therapist at the gym,and he said it is almost like a 'shin splint effect' on the ulna. They make a strap that applies pressure to area, or wrap it prior to lifting. Exercises that seem to irritate it should be avoided asap.

I was planning to learn how to do handstands, I wanted to do handstand presses - a great upper body exercise - I started by doing presses from the pike position, and then doing partner-assisted handstand presses. I then did some more research and discovered that straining the body with your heart above your head is bad for blood pressure and could even cause a stroke. This put me off, did you know about the blood pressure issue?

No I was not aware of the blood pressure issue. I didn't want to use it as an excercise really, though. I just wanted to be able to do it because it looks cool :D.

Something similar I just thought about because of this thread was hanging like a bat from a pull up bar and pulling your head to the top where your feet are. It would be an exercise for the core. It has been done and I think it be a good exercise right?

Yeah, being able to do handstands is a cool skill to show off with! People who can walk doing handstands have strong shoulders, lots of strain is on the shoulder joint when in a handstand. If you feel the blood rushing to your head and your face goes red, that's your blood pressure rising.

It makes sense that you'd get strong shoulders because you're essentially holding up your entire body weight. Hmm, I bet if you were able to do simple excercises from that position, you could be jacked. However, I do think the blood pressure thing could be scary but I guess you'll learn by doing eh. Also check back, I want to hear your results.
