Slow eating helps to reduce weight
Following a healthy diet does not necessarily mean that you are living a healthy life. Most people follow hectic, fast-paced lifestyles. Meal times have also become rushed and we no longer take the time to eat slowly and enjoy a meal.
The wide availability of fast foods also contributes to this rushed eating. Most of will remember being told to eat our meals slowly. However, this simple, but important instruction seems to be long forgotten.
Eating slowly contributes to a healthier lifestyle. Just spending a few additional minutes at meal times will have numerous benefits to your health. In addition to ensuring better digestion, eating slowly also means that you eat a reduced amount of food and this means loss of weight. Eating slowly is highly beneficial for individuals affected with arthritis, low blood pressure and diabetes. Outlined below are some of the benefits of eating slowly.
When a person eats slowly, he also chews his food well. This allows for better digestion. The first step of digestion takes place in the mouth itself when the food combines with saliva and starts breaking down into smaller pieces. This makes it easier for digestion. If food is swallowed whole or in larger pieces, the stomach will find it difficult to digest all of it. This can lead to several digestion-related problems. Eating slowly also means that you will enjoy your food more because it allows you to take in all the textures and flavors. One of the primary benefits of eating slowly is that you will end up consuming a smaller amount of calories. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes for us to realize that we are full. So those who eat fast will keep on consuming as much as they can within that time. This means a greater calorie intake. When we eat slowly, we are able to know when we are full and when to stop eating. Individuals who eat fast are also inclined to eating more junk foods. The habit of eating slowly influences our eating habits in general. It takes a longer time to consume a balanced, proper meal consisting of vegetables, grains and pulses.
Eating slowly is also a great stress buster as it allows us to spend more time on experiencing the food. Persons who eat fast tend to have a lot on their minds and are completely oblivious to the flavors and foods they are taking in. Another disadvantage of eating fast is that is can lead to acid reflux and heartburn. This especially occurs in individuals suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease. Studies have shown that eating fast may be linked with insulin resistance. This is a condition which can increase a person’s risk of developing heart problems and diabetes.
There are some tips that you can follow to slow down your eating. Drinking water between bites forces you to slow your eating. The water also fills you up and gives a feeling of satiation. Some individuals find that talking a lot during meals helps to slow down eating. Another effective way of getting yourself used to eating slowly is to put your spoon and form down after every bite. You can also attempt to slow down your eating by using smaller utensils. Today it has become the habit of most people to eat in front of the computer. This causes one to eat must faster and hence is not a beneficial habit. Also refrain from eating in front of the television as this leads to a sort of automatic quick eating. One tends to eat more slowly while seated and hence it is best to avoid eating while standing or walking.
