Autumn foods and vegetables to choose from
Almost all foods that we grow are seasonal. While it is easy to find some of these foods in one season, you may not have the pleasure of eating them throughout the year. Summers are the period when you have the maximum variety of foods. This is the season where you have plenty of healthy choices to make.
However, if you want to stay healthy, these healthy choices have to be extended to the other seasons as well.
It is therefore necessary to have healthy foods even in autumn when the availability of most of the staple foods is lower.
It is fortunate, that there are a variety of healthy options of food to consume in autumn. Here’s a comprehensive list of what you should be having to keep yourself healthy in the autumn.
Fruits
Apples: Though apples are fruits of winter, they are available all year round.
Apples are excellent sources of antioxidants in the body. They protect you from colon and breast cancers and are also helpful in keeping kidney stones at bay.
Apple has vital nutrients that help in lowering the bad cholesterol of the body.
The idiom that says, an apple a day keeps the doctor away rings true because eating apples can reduce the incidence of diabetes and asthma – both chronic disorders of a very serious nature.
Pears: Pears too are excellent sources of anti oxidants. They promote the health of the heart and help in the regeneration of the muscles and tissues.
They are rich in vitamin C and help boost the body’s immunity.
Avocado: Avocados have lots of monounsaturated fats and help in lowering cholesterol levels. These help in preventing prostrate cancer. They are rich in folates and vitamin E.
Vegetables
Leeks: Leeks are aromatic vegetables that help lower the bad cholesterol and help regulate the sugar levels of the blood. These are also rich in vitamin C and B6 and iron.
Green Beans: Rich in vitamin K, these beans help in the healthy formation of bones and have many other nutrients that are anti inflammatory in nature. They help control the symptoms of inflammatory diseases like arthritis and asthma. Green beans are rich in many nutrients like vitamin A, C, K, manganese, potassium, iron, magnesium and riboflavin.
Broccoli: Broccoli is one of the healthiest foods of all seasons. It is rich in many of the essential nutrients. It helps to build strong bones, boosts the immune system, prevents ulcers, and fights against heart diseases. It is rich in iron, calcium, Vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, and B6.
