Background
Donna Gates’ The Body Ecology Diet: Recovering Your Health and Rebuilding Your Immunity focuses largely on cleaning the body through raw and cultured foods. The author’s philosophy is that the probiotics in foods such as kefir and other fermented foods combined with an ample helping of healthy fats can go a long way toward overall promotion of health. The Body Ecology Diet puts a focus on the beneficial microorganisms in the body’s digestive track. As Gates sees it a healthy digestive tract is the first defense against hostile microbes that can lead to disease. In many aspects, The Body Ecology Diet is similar to other yeast free diets and the Candida diet.
What to Eat
Fermented foods such as kefir and yogurt are high on Gates list of must have foods. Also healthy fats, such as flaxseed oil, olive oil, pumpkin sees and sunflower seeds are all on the menu. Raw foods are also seen as being very important as well.
The Good
The Body Ecology Diet has several big strong points. One is that the food on Gates’ diet is, in general, highly nutritious. Secondly, by opting for more raw food it is possible to for dieters to get more enzymes in their diet, which will increase overall health. Third, The Body Ecology Diet has a general focus on health and not just losing weight.
The Bad
Some dieters may find that they have to give up many of the processed foods that they love so much, yet this is probably something dieters should be doing regardless. For example, sugar intake is decreased considerably. Of course, it is hard to argue with the fact that reducing sugar is something that most dieters could benefit from. Overall, some dieters might find The Body Ecology Diet to be a bit foreign, but the book focuses on quality nutrition, which is a definite plus.
The Cost
The Body Ecology Diet costs about $20-$25 in paperback.
