The Autism & ADHD Diet Review:
The Autism & ADHD Diet: A Step-by-Step Guide to Hope and Healing by Living Gluten Free and Casein Free (GFCF) and other Interventions is an important book by Barrie Silberberg that delves into topics that are not widely understood by the general population. Silberberg was motivated to research this topic and write the book as a result of her son Noah's experience with the GFCF diet. Noah saw his autism symptoms dramatically improve once he began the diet.
What to Eat
The GFCF diet is one that is free of preservatives, artificial dyes, gluten and milk protein (also known as casein). Those who have tried to avoid these compounds and foods already, need not be told how difficult of a process it can be. Just avoiding gluten alone can be a challenging undertaking. Part of what makes Silberberg's work a valuable one is that it helps those new to the diet learn where to start, where they can buy GFCF foods, and even how to avoid cross-contamination.
You have to love a book that could potentially help those suffering from autism or those who are sensitive to gluten. The GFCF, or gluten-free casein-free diet, does just that and it does it well. Gluten can be found in bareley, kamut, spelt, rye, wheat and oats. Casein is found in milk. This diet may not help those looking to lose weight, but many aspects of this diet could help one become healthier.
It should be noted that much of the effectiveness of the GFCF diet is based upon observations made by those caring for individuals with autism. To date, studies have not shown the diet to be an effective form of treatment. Yet, observational data from caregivers is strong. It should further be noted that one study showed that boys on a casein-free diet had less bone thickness when compared to their counterparts.
The book can be purchased for as little as $10.
