Background

The basic idea behind Breakthrough is that it will soon be common to live past 100 years of age, provided certain steps are followed. Although some of these are basc (eat health, get exercise, make sure that you get some), Somers points out that Americans are about fifty years behind, and that we need to embrace drug therapy as part of a healthy lifestyle; that there are simple cures for just about anything if we are willing to take the right substance for the ailment. We have already embraced surgery, and that’s far more invasive than drug therapy could ever be.

What to Eat

Someone following this diet must eat healthy. There are very few specifics given, which Somers identify as anything you can “pick, pluck, milk or shoot.” Processed foods, including diet sodas, should be avoided.

The Good

This diet can extend your life; you just need to decide to what degree you want medicines in your life.

The Bad

The biggest problem with this diet is that it depends on supplements for a wide variety of effects. Although the science is solid, dependency on pills of any kind for one’s health, when one is already healthy, needs to be limited. Somers pushes for bioidentical hormone replacement, which is somewhat controversial and not at all natural.

Exercise

Exercise is encouraged in this diet.
