Eating For Depression Review:

Background

There are a variety of reasons to explain depression, and a number of them focus on nutrition. For example, too many low-quality carbohydrates and sugars, or not enough minerals and vitamins, are seen as at least partly to blame for depression.

What to Eat

The creators of the diet emphasize the importance of avoiding self-medication, both in terms of alcohol and off-the-shelf medicine. These can only make the depression worse and may create other health risks as well. That said, any cure is going to be tricky to develop, as there are a number of different reasons for the depression in the first place. Omega-3 fatty acids (found primarily in fish) are recommended, as are lean meats, whole grains, and fruits and vegetables. Also, eating regularly should be emphasized, preferably three meals and some snacks, in order to keep up blood sugar and avoid mood swings.

The Good

Although professional assistance is recommended for any treatment of depression, this diet is definitely a good idea, and a clear step in the right direction.

The Bad

Although this is a good idea, it should not be tried without consulting a doctor first; depression can be a big problem if not treated correctly and quickly. This diet should be combined with an actual treatment plan rather than done by oneself.

Exercise

Exercise can help with depression, as it increases the production of endorphins, the feel-good hormones.

Costs

There are no extra costs associated with this diet.
