Overview

Eat Carbs, Lose Weight is one of several books written by the famous fitness guru, Denise Austin. Austin is definitely not looking her 52 years. This accomplished author and exercise program hosts has also served on the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. Her 2006 book, Eat Carbs, Lose Weight is all about allowing dieters to have the carbs they desire and still lose weight. To accomplish this feat, Austin teamed with a nutritionist to design a diet that focuses on “eating carb smart,” which is the title of one of her book's chapters. Much of Eat Carbs, Lose Weight deals with changing people's approach to how they eat carbs and what carbs they do eat. Some of the chapters include, “The Return of Carbs,” which deals with why dieters should be eating carbs and “Carbohydrate Addiction.” “Carbohydrate Addiction” is interesting in that it outlines how dieters can eat high-carbohydrate foods, including chocolate and still lose weight. In the third part of the book, Austin addresses recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. Its probably no surprise that Austin believes that carbs have received a “bad rap” and that they should not be restricted in a harsh fashion as is popular with many diets.

The Good

While Eat Carbs, Lose Weight promotes the concept of eating more carbs, it does so in a balanced fashion. At no point is Austin stating that dieters should consume mostly carbs, instead she states that balance is necessary and that carbs should probably not exceed 50% of caloric intake. She also links this concept to overall weight loss, the glycemic index and glycemic load. Refreshingly, Eat Carbs, Lose Weight also addresses the science behind food, carbs and diet. Overall, the book is stuffed full of information not just concerning carbs but nutrition and dieting in general.

The Bad

Some may wish that Eat Carbs, Lose Weight had more recipes and more guidelines. Indeed this would be helpful and would have increased the overall quality of the book. Many others would obviously argue that Austin is putting too much attention on carbs at the benefit of other foods.

Cost

At this point a trade paperback of this book can be picked up for about just $5.
