This diet is based on the eating philosophies of Andrew Weil M.D as outlined in the book Eight Weeks to Optimum Health: A Proven Program for Taking Full Advantage of Your Body’s Natural Healing Power. Weil, who is one of the pioneers of integrative medicine, encourages the reader to improve resilience to disease and also feel more joy and strength. To achieve this goal, Weil encourages gradual changes leading up to a new diet including whole grains, fruits, and vegetables and more exercise. The book says it will assist dieters “physically, mentally, and spiritually” as it seeks to help the reader establish a whole new lifestyle. Weil also offers a online community to complement the book through his website.
What to Eat
Weil advocates a mostly vegetarian diet, which includes lots of grains, fruits, vegetables and soy. He also advises against trans fats and sugars. Weil recommends keeping saturated fat intake as low as possible.
The Good
Many of the diet and exercise suggestions in the book are recommended by doctors to prevent health problems and disease. Using the diet as a preventative measure is definitely a good idea. The book's gradual approach in changing one's lifestyle to a healthier one is a good strategy.
The Bad
