Background

The focus of the book is to learn the caloric and fat equivalent of the foods you eat each day. Each food lists the minutes that you will have to exercise to burn off the calories after consuming it. It also lists what type of exercise you would have to perform to do this, such as running and walking. The goal is to motivate readers to learn just how much calories they are ingesting every day, so that they will take the step towards healthier eating habits.

What to eat

This book is not a diet, so there are no recommendations on what to eat. However, the focus is on what NOT to eat, which can be seen by the high calorie and fat contents of many common foods. There are over 7500 foods listed, including dairy, meats, snacks, vegetables, fast foods and desserts.

The Good

The Diet Detective's Countdown is an excellent source for those who are watching calories and need to know the nutritional value of the foods they are eating. A large variety of foods are listed. They are easy to find in the book, which includes both common names and name-brands.

The Bad

Caloric equivalents will not be the same for everyone, which is not mentioned in the book. There are no details about how intense an exercise equivalent should be.

Exercise

Details about how long you need to do a certain exercise to burn off the caloric equivalent of a food. For example, one can of soda would equal 48 minutes of yoga needed to burn it off. There are no actual exercise programs listed in the book.
