Background

The DASH diet is a medical plan designed to help patients lower their blood pressure. DASH, which is short for “Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension,” places less important on the number of calories consumed than on the amount of sodium and other dangerous nutrients. The DASH plan was created by the US Government Department of Health and is not considered a direct weight-loss program (although it often results in the loss of pounds because of certain dietary changes).

What to eat

An average of 2000 calories a day, mostly from high-fiber foods and lots of lean proteins. Whole grains constitute the largest food group in this plan. No overly processed foods, no canned foods (because of their high sodium content).

The Good

Excellent results when it comes to lowering blood pressure and reducing the symptoms associated with it, including shortness of breath, headaches and dizziness. Hundreds of free recipes available online.

The Bad

It may not cause apparent weight loss or, if it happens, it will be slow and over time.

Exercise

Not a direct component of the diet, although it is recommended in passing. Costs: No specific foods or supplements required.

Clinical trials conducted by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute with high success.
