Dietary supplements can boost your health

The reality of the modern diet is that it often leaves us deficient in essential nutrients – even if we believe the food we’re eating to be very healthy. Fresh fruit and vegetables are rarely as fresh as we’d like (reports have shown apples sold in supermarkets to be as much as ten months old), meaning that the nutrient content has often depleted considerably. Because of this, nutritional supplements can ensure that we do not become deficient in any essential vitamins and minerals.

Prevent Disease

Free radicals are believed to float around the body, damaging healthy cells and increasing the risk of diseases including cancer and heart disease. Yet certain dietary supplements can significantly reduce these dangers, due to their content of phytochemicals and antioxidants. The acai berry is a fruit that has gained a lot of recognition in recent years, largely due to its high content of antioxidants. In addition, green tea has long been believed to reduce the risk of a host of degenerative diseases. However, while the acai berry and green tea are both undoubtedly very beneficial, just ensuring your levels of essential vitamins and minerals are constantly topped up will have a positive effect on the amounts of harmful free radicals in your body.

Boost Energy and Ability To Exercise

One of the primary reasons we feel tired and unmotivated is due to our diet, since a diet high in processed and fatty foods will inevitably leave us feeling sluggish and sleepy. However, a lot of this does come down to the amount of nutrients we consume. Without certain vitamins our body is unable to convert the nutrients in food into energy our bodies can actually use. Therefore by ensuring our bodies have a regular supply of all the nutrients it requires, we will have more energy, therefore our ability to exercise will be enhanced, increasing our overall health further. The acai berry in particular, has been shown to have a significant effect on the body’s energy levels, largely due to its high concentration of energy giving nutrients.

Improve The Immune System

We all want to ward off the common cold, and the risk of falling foul to the flu in winter, and vitamins are essential in ensuring that our immune systems are working to maximum capacity. It’s common knowledge that those who eat unhealthily fall ill more often than those with a contrasting diet. However, it is vitamins A and D that have gained particular attention recently, due to their ability to boost the health of the immune system. While the best source of vitamin D is the sun, many parts of the world suffer from insufficient sunlight exposure, meaning that a vitamin D supplement is integral. Vitamin A is found in many fruits, with the acai berry in particular showcasing a very high content of this essential nutrient. However, for those with a less than perfect diet, a supplement containing Vitamin A will certainly help ward off those troublesome coughs and colds.

A Final Note

While it is undeniable that for most of us, nutritional supplements are highly beneficial, certain vitamins can become harmful to the body when consumed in large quantities. Because of this, it is always a good idea to study the exact content of each supplement before taking two in succession, or to only take a supplement every other day if your diet is already rich in fruits and vegetables. In addition, if you are pregnant or suffer with any medical conditions it is advisable to speak with your doctor, since certain supplements may not be suitable for you.
