Comfrey uses

Comfrey is an herb that is used as a natural fertilizer. It is a plant of the boraginacea family of plants. For many centuries, comfrey has been regarded for its medicinal properties.

One of the most common uses of comfrey is its use as a first aid solution. In times before the invention of drugs and medicines that can be used for first aid, comfrey was used on wounds. Comfrey is known to accelerate the healing process of wounds and helps to close wounds faster.

This helps to avoid the exposure of the wound to opportunistic infections which may otherwise have sufficient time to enter the body. The quick healing of the wound thanks to comfrey also helps to prevent the wound scar from being excessively pronounced.

The effect of comfrey on the healing of bone and joint related injuries is one of the biggest benefits of comfrey. The comfrey leaf is crushed into a paste mixed with water and applied over an injury site. The application of this comfrey paste is said to provide a healing and soothing effect to the bone and tissue that has been damaged in the injury. Sprain injuries are extremely common in the ankle joint. This occurs when a person twists or goes over his or her ankle. The paste made of comfrey has proven to be very effective for the healing of this injury. Comfrey is thus one of the most effective natural healing herbs.

When looking at other uses of comfrey one would also realize that it is very effective in treating many skin conditions. Skin infections are easily treated using comfrey paste. Some skin infections cause boils and cuts to develop in the top layer of the skin, exposing the lower layers to further infection. The application of the comfrey paste eliminates this problem because the skin heals very quickly under the influence of this natural healing herb.

It should be noted that comfrey is a subject of some controversy when it comes to the safety of ingesting the herb and products made from the herb. Despite the various uses of comfrey, some studies suggest that long term consumption of comfrey could cause liver and kidney damage. Studies also suggest that comfrey could also cause cancer. It may therefore be safe to use comfrey only on external wounds and not to ingest it until some valid scientific research proves otherwise. Herbal practitioners are unanimous in their opinion that comfrey is beneficial and does not cause these side effects to occur.

However it is always good to consult your doctor when considering the various uses of comfrey.
