Can make you more attractive- in a day eating five time
Any diet worth its salt encourages dieters to eat the recommended five portions of fruits and vegetables a day and now there’s even more of a reason to make sure you do so – because eating your five a day can make you more attractive.
The natural yellow and red pigments in the likes of tomatoes, carrots and mangoes can actually change our skin tone, says a new study from the University of St Andrews. Research showed that eating just two more portions of fruit and vegetables a day could change the skin’s hue in six weeks.
What’s more, further tests showed that the skin tone of those that ate lots of fresh fruits and veg on a regular basis was considered more attractive than that of people who only ate small amounts of veg.
Health experts hope that if nothing else, the vanity aspect may encourage people to eat more greens – and yellows and reds.
The news comes as another study out this week revealed that 61 per cent of people admit to not eating enough fruits and vegetables. More than a third admit that their diet has got worse since the economic downturn, while one in 12 worrying thought that tomato ketchup, strawberry ice cream and Terry’s chocolate orange counted towards their five a day.
The Department of Health recommends everyone should eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day (excluding potatoes and other starchy foods) because they can reduce the risk of some cancers, heart disease and stroke.
Fruits and vegetables are particularly good to eat if you’re dieting or want to lose weight; those people who fill up on fruits and vegetables are not as likely to binge or suffer from hunger cravings, reducing the likelihood of eating unhealthy calorie-rich food which can lead to obesity.
Author of the St Andrews research, Ross Whitehead said: “Most of us know we should eat plenty of fruit and veg, yet we are not sufficiently motivated to actually go ahead and eat a healthy diet.
“We hope that by highlighting the rapidly achievable benefits of a healthy diet on our attractiveness will be a stronger incentive for people to eat more healthily. Knowing you are going to look more attractive in a few weeks may be more persuasive than the promise of health benefits later in life.”
The research used 35 student participants, mostly white, who were told not to use make-up, sunbeds or fake tan for the six weeks period of the study. Their skin tones were measured before, during and after the test period.
The researchers admit that the results of the study may be different for older people or those with non-white skin, and said more research was needed.
