The procedure is done laparoscopically, which means that it is only a slightly invasive surgery. Small incisions (1 cm) are made along the abdomen, and this is where the tubes are inserted. The gastric band is then inserted and placed around the stomach, forming a ring. A lock is fastened to hold the band in place. Thereafter, the access port that is connected to the gastric band is then attached to the abdominal wall.

To lower the incidence of experiencing any side effects, the patient should eat slowly and chew food properly. Water should be drunk in between meals with a total intake of no less than 6 to 8 cups a day. Eating and drinking at the same time may cause discomfort and vomiting. Overeating and eating in large portions will most likely cause stomach discomfort.
