Speed up metabolism and lose weight for health
The body performs several different functions and in order to function properly, it requires energy. This energy or fuel is created through the chemical process of metabolism in which nutrients and oxygen combine. The energy is measured in terms of calories.
We burn calories constantly even during activities such as sitting or sleeping. Therefore the process of metabolism is what regulates and manages this much-needed fuel. The main source of energy is glucose.
When the body utilizes its glucose reserves, it goes to the fat reserves as its main source of fuel. In cases where glucose levels are too high, the body saves the extra energy by converting it into fat. This leads to weight gain.
If you want to boost your metabolism, you should keep in mind various factors such as your gender, age, weight, level of activity, physical condition and muscle tissue on the body. The resting metabolic rate (RMR) is the amount of calories burnt when you are resting. At this time too, your body is producing energy, but it’s the minimal amount required to perform functions related to the brain, heart and other organs. Weight loss occurs when metabolism is high. You can speed up your metabolism and shed those extra pounds by following some simple tips.
Make sure you eat breakfast every morning. Your body goes without food throughout the night and if you don’t eat anything in the morning, it goes into ‘starvation’ mode and your metabolic level will start dropping. Studies have shown that eating breakfast can raise metabolism by about 10 percent. Therefore you will be burn more calories during the day and also lose weight in the bargain. Packing in a good breakfast in the mornings also means that you will be less hungry throughout the day.
Meal timing is a key factor in boosting metabolism. Most of your calorie consumption should take place earlier in the day. Eat fewer calories as the day progresses. It is best to eat nothing or very little after the evening meal. However make sure that you don’t skip meals.
Space out your meals such that you are eating about 5 to 6 small meals each day. This ensures that your energy levels stay stable. It also prevents overeating.
Most people trying to lose weight tend to consume a very small quantity of food. This is a mistake. You need to eat enough so that your body functions well and your metabolism remains high.
When the body is denied of sufficient food, it starts saving energy in preparation for possible starvation. The exact opposite happens when you eat more than you need. Here the body will store the excess calories as fat. The key is to burn more calories that you consume. Moderation in diet is an often ignored, but highly essential habit for weight loss.
Increasing your level of physical activity is another effective way to increase metabolism and lose weight. Engage in some cardiovascular or weight training exercise. The calorie burning that occurs during such exercise will result in quick weight loss. When you gain in lean muscle mass, you will undergo a significant loss of fat. It is advisable to exercise in the mornings just after waking up as studies show that fat burning takes place more efficiently after a state of fasting.
Drink plenty of water every day. Metabolism and other bodily functions take place properly when there is adequate water intake.
If you feel your energy levels are low, talk to you doctor about taking nutritional supplements. Vitamin B12 is especially important for energy and if you are unable to get enough of the vitamin through the diet, it is advisable to take a supplement.
Substances such as l-carnitine and co-enzyme Q10 are produced naturally by the body for energy production. These substances are also available in the form of supplements and help in combating fatigue.
There are a variety of herbal remedies which are known to boost metabolism. Ginseng is one such herb that is quite popular for its energizing effect on the body. The Chinese herb, Schizandra, may also be helpful. Before using any herbal remedy, it is best to talk to your doctor as there are some precautions that must be taken. For instance, ginseng is not suitable for individuals with high blood pressure. Pregnant women also should refrain using any herbal remedies and supplements.
Green tea is rich in polyphenols and also contains natural caffeine. Thus it is beneficial in elevating metabolism and encouraging fat burning. The tea is often recommended for people on weight loss diets. Green tea is also available in the form of powder and capsules.
Proper sleep enables healthy regeneration and healing of the body. Make sure you sleep well every night.
