Signs of thyroid problem and its treatment

The thyroid gland is a small butterfly-shaped structure present in the lower region of the neck. It plays an important role in the health and functioning of the human body because it releases the thyroid hormone. This hormone regulates a wide range of functions ranging from appetite and body weight to mood and body temperature.

This is also a sensitive gland and certain nutritional deficiencies can affect it. Intake of certain medications and environmental toxins can also adversely affect this gland. Malfunctioning of the thyroid gland occurs in a large number of people and individuals with thyroid problems may also experience other health issues.

There are several warning signs of a thyroid problem. A large number of people with thyroid complications report some kind of pain in the body. The pain is often felt in the joints and muscles. In some cases, the arms and legs may also get affected.

Pain may not occur in everyone with a thyroid problem. Also, if pain does occur, it may not necessarily be associated with a thyroid problem. Therefore it is important to undergo a medical evaluation if symptoms of pain are experienced. Thyroid problems often results in symptoms in the neck area. There may be a sensation of swelling in the neck. Tightening and discomfort in the neck may also be experienced. In many cases, changes in the voice may occur. The individual is likely to experience hoarseness while speaking. It is essential to carefully monitor the neck for any signs of enlargement or inflammation. Genetics could also be one of the warning signs of a thyroid problem. Thyroid complications are known to run in families. Therefore if similar symptoms are experienced, it is necessary to consult a doctor immediately.
Thyroid conditions also affect the hair and skin. Individuals with thyroid problems often complain of hair loss.

Hypothyroidism causes the hair to become dry, rough and brittle and this leads to breakage and hair fall. The skin can also thicken and become scaly and dry. Hypothyroidism leads to hair loss in the outer part of the eyebrows. Hyperthyroidism can also lead to severe loss of hair. Skin changes are also likely to occur. Hypothyroidism is sometimes associated with constipation. This may be severe and is likely to last for long periods of time. Individuals with hyperthyroidism are more likely to suffer from diarrhea or irritable bowel syndrome. Women with hypothyroidism may experience heavier menstruation. Menstruation may also occur more frequently and can cause pain and discomfort. Women with hyperthyroidism often observe lighter periods which may be shorter than usual and also more frequent. In case of undiagnosed and untreated thyroid problems, infertility may also occur.

Abnormally low cholesterol levels may be a symptom of hyperthyroidism. Individuals with high cholesterol levels who do not seem to respond to exercise and proper diet may be suffering from hypothyroidism. Thyroid disease is also associated with mood changes. Depression is likely to occur in those with hypothyroidism, while anxiety and panic occurs in those with hyperthyroidism. Individuals who are unable to gain or lose weight even after taking appropriate measures may require a medical evaluation to check for thyroid problems. One of the signs of hypothyroidism is difficulty in weight loss. Another warning sign of a thyroid problem is fatigue and tiredness. Individuals with hyperthyroidism often experience insomnia that results in exhaustion the next day. If any of these warning signs are experienced, it is advisable to consult a doctor. Treatment for thyroid disorders involves certain medications that help to bring balance to hormonal levels. Alternative treatments for thyroid problems include diet supplements, lifestyle modifications, exercise and herbal remedies.
