Side Effects of Acne
Acne is a frequent and common condition found among people of all ages. There are several causes for acne to develop ranging from mental stress, hormonal shifts to environmental factors. It is impossible to avoid acne altogether without a healthy diet, good hygiene and constant care for the skin. The primary cause of acne is the excessive secretion of oil when the skin pores get clogged developing bacterium that leads to acne breakouts. There are several acne remedies available to cure acne from organic treatments, therapeutic treatments to over the counter acne medication. As compared to organic treatments over the counter medication have more side effects. It does not however mean that person should not be more careful when treating acne with any kind of treatment. Often certain home remedies for acne can cause an allergic reaction or make matters worse. The homemade remedies are also a better option when a person is suffering mainly from mild acne. For severe acne it is recommended that a person consults a dermatologist who will prescribe the right treatment.
Over the counter medication that is generally prescribed for acne include products that contain benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. They basically hold properties that reduce inflammation and kill infection all together. It is preferred that the cream applied contains from 2.5 percent to 10 percent of benzoyl peroxide since this amount is ideal for getting rid of acne while at the same time making sure that adverse effects on the skin are avoided. Usually people use creams or products with a higher percentage in the belief that a higher percent would cure the acne faster. However the side effects are quite harsh in such cases. It can cause headaches, itching and burning on the skin. In severe cases isotretinoin is prescribed by the doctor which is a very strong medication. It side effects can be serious since the medication can cause chest pains and depression.
Topical treatments are considered to be a stronger dose in contrast to over the counter medication. It is generally used to quickly and efficiently get rid of bacteria. However the medication can only be taken as directed by the doctor and based on relevant prescription. In case the acne gets worse or the side effects appear immediately the medicine should be discontinued immediately.
Some side effects that are common and frequent include acne scarring, mental distress and low self esteem. Acne is one condition that simply doesn’t go away and can happen at any time therefore it can become quite a dilemma. For those suffering from low self esteem appearance becomes highly important therefore those with acne condition go through high level of anxiety and mental stress. This only aggravates the skin condition. Therefore it is extremely important to focus on health since prevention is better than cure.
