Remedies for spring allergies in home

Many individuals experience an increase in the symptoms of allergy when spring approaches. It is also possible for symptoms to occur in people who have never had allergies in their life. Spring allergies result in symptoms such as continuous sneezing, watery eyes, runny nose and nasal congestion.

This condition is also known as hay fever or allergic rhinitis. Seasonal allergies tend to improve when the allergens are no longer present in high levels. They are also likely to come back next season.

Individuals who experience allergy symptoms due to more than one irritant may experience this condition throughout the year.

An individual experiences symptoms of an allergy when there is exposure to allergens. These allergens serve as triggers and may include dust, pollen, animal dander and foods such as eggs or gluten. When the body is exposed to allergens, the immune cells release certain chemicals which lead to the occurrence of allergy symptoms. The symptoms may last for just a day or may continue for weeks. In many cases, spring allergies are difficult to diagnose. This is because the symptoms are similar to those of other disorders such as upper respiratory infections, common cold and flu. Skin infections may also sometimes lead to symptoms similar to those of spring allergies. Some of the most common symptoms of hay fever include sneezing, nasal discharge, nasal congestion, chest congestion and itchiness in the eyes. There may also be a dry cough which can become aggravated when lying down. Individuals who suffer from allergies often experience headache, head congestion, tiredness and under-eye dark circles. Allergies may contribute to other conditions such as sinusitis and asthma. In case of severe allergies, more serious symptoms such as reduced blood pressure, breathing difficulty and hives may occur. The most common allergens during spring time include weeds, trees and grasses. The symptoms may worsen when there is wind as the pollen count increases.

The best way to deal with spring allergies is prevention. Those who have experienced seasonal allergy symptoms should ensure that they prevent exposure to allergens during those seasons. They are also advised to remain indoors on days when the pollen count is high. Clothes, towels and bed linen should never be dried outside. One must also change the clothes and take a bath after coming from outside. Also wash the hair after coming home as pollen tends to adhere to the hair and can trigger symptoms during the night. When indoors the windows and doors should remain closed. It helps to filter the air indoors by using an air conditioner. An air purifier is also beneficial in this regard. Covering the nose and mouth with a handkerchief while doing housework will prevent exposure to dust. If symptoms such as sneezing and nasal discharge do occur, it is advisable to do steam inhalation.

Add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to hot water and deeply inhale the vapors arising out of it. This will also reduce nasal congestion and also helps to soothe the nasal membranes and reduce their sensitivity. It is also beneficial to use a neti pot to clear out the nasal passages and sinuses. There are many over-the-counter medications available which help to alleviate symptoms of spring allergies. Many individuals also obtain relief from homeopathic treatment. Applying a small amount of petroleum jelly to the insides of the nose is known to help in reducing nasal irritation. Herbal teas also provide relief from symptoms of seasonal allergies. Some individuals tend to experience aggravated nasal congestion when they consume dairy products. In such cases, it is advisable to avoid drinking milk or eating any dairy foods as it can increase discomfort.
