Radiant, glowing skin is often a sign of good health while blemished, dull skin may be indicative of toxins in the body or poor detoxification of the body. It is important to understand the causes of your skin damage. Once you do this, you can protect your skin from these factors and prevent more damage.

It is possible to restore radiance to your skin with proper skin care. Here are 7 secrets to radiant skin:

1. Get rid of those Toxins – The most important step in detoxifying your body is water.

Drinking water helps improve the flow of nutrients to the cells and also enhances kidney function. In addition, water helps to eliminate toxins and waste material from the body. When there are insufficient water levels, there is a concentration of toxic materials in the body and this may be manifested in various health problems such as skin ailments. Health experts recommend drinking about 6 to 8 glasses of water daily. This should be plain, clean water and not juices, energy drinks or diet soda.

2. Get your Dose of Antioxidants – Antioxidants help to protect the skin from premature ageing and damage. The best way to get your daily dose of antioxidants is to drink a glass of berry juice in the mornings. You can choose from a variety of berries such as blueberries, blackberries, strawberries and raspberries. Other antioxidant-rich fruits like plums, cherries and pomegranates are also good options. Just make sure that there is no added sugar.

3. Exercise – Engaging in any kind of exercise for just half an hour each day helps to boost blood flow, increases your fitness levels and eliminates toxins through the sweat. You can opt for outdoor activities such as jogging or biking or even stay indoors and exercise on a treadmill. It is important to choose an activity that you enjoy.

4. Take a Detox Bath – A weekly detox bath helps to flush those toxins out of your body and also hydrates your skin. Add one cup each of baking soda and Epsom salts and a few drops of essential oils such as lavender, chamomile and lemongrass oil to your warm bath water. Soak in this pampering bath for some time.

5. Exfoliation – Your skin eliminates toxins from the body through the pores. However the pores may be clogged sometimes due to buildup of dry skin cells. Use of heavy moisturizers and tight fitted clothing can also cause the pores to get blocked and this can make your skin dull. Dry skin brushing is an effective exfoliation technique which takes off the dead outer layers of the skin. This enables the pores to breathe properly. You can do this daily in the mornings or evenings. After dry brushing the skin, take a warm bath or shower.

6. Don’t Smoke – Cigarettes are toxic for your health. Smoking can speed up the process of ageing and lead to fine lines, wrinkles and rough, dull skin. It can also lead to skin discoloration and broken blood vessels beneath the skin surface. Apart from damaging your skin, smoking also affects the rest of your body in serious ways.

7. Eat Healthy – Following a healthy, well-balanced diet is highly beneficial for skin health. Include protein rich foods in your diet such as lean chicken and egg whites. Protein helps in the repair of skin cells. Healthy fats are also good for your skin and hence it is advisable to consume olive oil, nuts, seeds and fish such as salmon, tuna and mackerel which are rich in beneficial omega-3 fatty acids. Avoid eating sugary, spicy and oily foods.
