Problem of thoracic spinal stenosis

Myelopathy or spinal cord injury is characterized as a disturbance in your spinal cord, resulting to the loss of mobility and sensation. There are two main causes. One is trauma due to a fall, gunshots, war injuries, automobile accidents, and diving accidents.

The other is because of diseases like tumors, spina bifida, and Frienreich’s ataxia. The spinal cord doesn’t have to be entirely damaged to lose its function. It can still remain intact even if you’re suffering from a spinal cord injury.

There’s a difference between back and spinal cord injuries. The former usually includes spinal stenosis or pinched nerves and ruptured disks. It’s probably that you can have a broken back or neck and not a spinal cord injury if the damage is only in the vertebrae and the spinal cord is intact.

Effects of the injury can differ depending on its level and type. It can be described as complete, which means there’s absolutely no function below the injury level. It means you cannot do any voluntary movements and that you lack physical sensation. They are normally bilateral, affecting both sides of your body. Incomplete injury means you can still have some sensation but incomplete. They can perhaps move one arm more than the other or acquire more function in either side.

The thoracic spine is located in the upper back and is composed of 12 vertebral bodies These don’t have a lot of motion because they are firmly joined with the sternum or breastbone and the ribs. They may not be the main source for back pain because of this, yet the junction between the ribs and the spine, costovertebral junction, can. The thoracic spine can, however, be vulnerable to trauma, like any other parts of the spine.

Although surgery proves to be the only option for some, it is not the first thing you have to do. The best way is to consult a doctor first about your condition, after which, medication to relieve the pain in your upper back will be given to you. This is only when the pain has become more frequent and has not only affected the performance of your work but your relationships and budget as well. Doctors would usually recommend pain relievers like acetaminophen, although you have to take note that these medicines are only good pain relievers because even up to date, there is no medicine yet that could completely cure the thoracic spinal stenosis.

There are also ways to improve condition of your thoracic spine. This includes regular exercise. This helps maintain flexibility and strength for your joints, ligaments, and spine. You can combine activities like biking and walking with stretching and training for better results. Stretching and toning before exercise can decrease the wear and tear of your back. It also lessens risks of injury of muscles by increasing their flexibility.

It can also help if you main proper body mechanics. Be conscious in how you lift heavier objects, stand, sit, and even in your manner of sleeping. You can select a seat that can properly support both upper and lower backs. You may even put a pillow if necessary.
