Problem of back stiffness

Stiff back is quite common today; this is a regular phenomenon for people who sit in front of the computer for long duration of time. A stiff back means a back that cannot function properly, restricts your activity, sometimes it can be a small irritation but a serious case of back stiffness can leave people without doing any activity for some period of time.

Medically, back stiffness occurs when the fiber in back musculature contracts and gives a stiff back and restricts movement of the person.

This can occur by being in same position for long durations or at the time of experiencing high amounts of stress, a person contracts himself to deal with stress and the bier in back too tends to contracts by giving a stiff back.

Back stiffness also occurs in people who have faced highly traumatic experiences; these experiences could be accidents and injury to the back. During the period of injury, the fiber in back tends to contract, if it remains in this stage for a long time, there are chances that the person might not be able to restore all functions in this back like previously, scar tissue formation might cause the back to heal and become almost normal over a period of time.

Muscle strain too causes back stiffness, muscle strain after accidents should be taken care of immediately if all functions of back required to be restored. Firstly, muscles should be protected and then made to relax, this will help the muscles to relax and also remove the scar tissue, once scar tissue formation starts. Removal of scar tissue formation will help restore a complete functionality of back.

Back stiffness can also occur if your sitting and sleeping posture is not proper. While sitting care should be taken to sit straight without hunching if you want to avoid a stiff back. While sleeping it would be better to use mattresses that give support to your back rather than let it sag down. Sagging back will create not just back stiffness but a variety of other spinal column related illnesses.

Proper sitting and sleeping postures will ensure that you have minimal chances of getting back stiffness. People who work at desk or in front of a computer for long hours should ensure that they get up once in an hour for about 5 minutes and either move around or else do some light exercises which will help tension and muscle strain in their backs.

In order to keep back absolutely healthy light stretching exercises at least once or twice a day will do the trick. Back pain and back stiffness will disappear after regular exercises and proper postures.
