Problem epidermal diseases

What is Epidermis

The epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin. This layer is made up of squamous cells which are flat and scaly. Round cells known as basal cells are present right under the squamous cells.

The epidermis has varying depths throughout the body and in the deepest parts, melanocytes (tiny glands which produce the skin coloring pigment) are present. These melanocytes produce melanin which gives our skin its color.

Symptoms of Epidermal Diseases

The epidermis, being the outermost layer of the skin and being exposed to the environment, is most susceptible to developing problems.

There are many different kinds of infections that the epidermis can suffer from. Since this layer of skin consists of melanocytes, most of the conditions which affect the epidermis are related to the functioning of the melanocytes. However, there are many other conditions that affect the epidermis too. Some of the common symptoms that are tell tale signs of an epidermal infection are:

Rashes,
Excessive pigmentation or the lack of it,
Acne,
Eczema,
Cysts,
Warts,
Melasma,
Vitiligo,
Psoriasis,
Rosacea, and
Melanoma.

Causes of Epidermal Diseases

There are many causes of skin disease. Lack of nutrition and hygiene are two of the major causes of epidermal diseases and infections. However, there are many diseases and infections that are caused due to bacteria and viruses. Bacteria like staphylococcus can cause boils and rashes on the epidermis. Apart from that, injuries to the skin, over exposure to ultraviolet rays and genetic predisposition to certain diseases can also cause epidermal conditions.

Conditions like acne could be caused due to hormonal fluctuations, consumption of fatty foods and sugars, and bacterial infections. Some of the other skin conditions are caused due to chronic indigestion or digestive disorders. Allergies from foods, chemicals, pollen and other common allergens can also cause epidermal problems.
