Probiotics prevent asthma
Probiotics can be described as the good or the friendly bacteria that are present in certain foods and supplements. People all around the world are becoming more aware of the several health benefits of probiotics. There are many health conditions and diseases that can be treated or at least controlled to a great extent, with the use of probiotics.
Some of the afflictions that can be alleviated with the help of probiotic therapy include diarrhea, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Crohn’s disease and yeast infections. Women have been known to use probiotics in the self treatment of vaginal and urinary infections too. Some of the information on probiotics and allergies claim that the use of probiotic supplements can help delay the development of certain allergies in children.
There are several studies that have also been conducted on probiotics and asthma, which claim that it can help prevent this respiratory disease to some extent.
Asthma is a very common respiratory disease that affects men, women and children of all ages. When a person suffers from this condition, the airways can narrow or even swell. It could become difficult for people to breathe because of the extra mucus produced by their bodies. This condition is usually characterized by bouts of wheezing, coughing and breathing difficulties. It is more common for people to suffer from an asthma attack after engaging in an activity that is physically strenuous. Therefore, this condition can affect a person’s day to day life. People suffering from severe asthma could be at a high risk of an attack that is life threatening. Unfortunately, there is no asthma cures, although its symptoms can be controlled.
What causes asthma to develop in adults?
The exact causes of asthma are still not clear, but it is believed that a combination of genetic and environmental factors could lead to this condition. The factors that could trigger off an asthma attack or worsen the condition could vary from one person to the other. Given below are some of the common factors that could lead to the development of asthma:
Allergic reactions to certain foods like shellfish and peanuts
Certain preservatives that are added to specific foods and beverages
Cold air
Common cold or other chronic respiratory problems
Excessive physical activity
Exposure to airborne allergens, such as dust mites, pollen, mold and animal dander
Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
Pollutants that are airborne, such as smoke
Stress or other strong emotions
Use of certain medication
What causes asthma in children?
There are several babies that have been affected by this problem too. This could cause just about any parent to get worried and at the same time wonder what causes asthma in babies. There are several babies and children who develop asthma mainly due to genetic factors. Hence, babies with a blood relative, like a parent or a sibling, suffering from asthma, are a lot more likely to develop this problem. Another one of the main causes of asthma in babies and infants is low birth weight. Exposure to pollutants, irritants, allergens or chemicals could also cause infants to suffer from asthma. Moreover, women who smoke during the course of pregnancy increase the risks of their children developing asthma soon after birth.
Treatments for Asthma
Since there is no cure for this condition, the treatment for asthma is mainly aimed at controlling the symptoms of the condition. There is no single treatment of asthma that is followed by all health practitioners. In fact, the treatment of asthma attack depends on its triggers to a great extent. Moreover, since asthma is caused by different factors, the method of addressing it is also bound to vary. For example, treatment of asthmatic bronchitis is bound to be a bit different as compared to asthma that has been brought on by allergies. One could use medication in order to keep the condition under control. However it is important that the medication be prescribed by the doctor.
However, the treatment of asthma in children may vary, as some of the medication may not be suitable for children, due to the adverse side effects that have been associated with them. Since pregnant women are not advised to take too many medicines, the treatment of asthma in pregnancy is also usually more natural. Even with natural remedies for asthma it is important to keep your doctor informed as some of these could trigger another reaction in the body.
Natural Remedies for Asthma
Asthma patients are strongly advised to avoid exposure to anything that may bring on an attack. Fortunately, there are quite a few natural remedies for asthma symptoms that are fairly suitable even for the prevention or the treatment of asthma exacerbation in children. Given below are some of the natural remedies for asthma that will help in controlling as also preventing the condition from occurring:
Maintaining adequate humidity in the environment, with the help of a vaporizer or a humidifier
Keeping the surrounding decontaminated and free of allergens like dust, pollen and dander
Getting an adequate amount of exercise each day, without indulging in exercises that are too strenuous
Being overweight worsens the symptoms of this condition and therefore, it is important for all people to maintain a healthy
body weight
Following a diet that is high in fruits and vegetables, to increase the levels of vitamins, minerals and nutrients in the body, which boost the immune system
Some health experts also recommend probiotics for children, to improve the functioning of the immune system and reduce asthma symptoms. Though mild, there are certain probiotics for children side effects too, that all parents should be aware of, which include bloating or intestinal gas, pain in the abdomen and at times, infections too. Therefore, parents should carefully consider all aspects of asthma, probiotics and allergies in children, before deciding to go in for them.
Asthma can be a very serious condition and self treatment is very dangerous. Hence, all instances of asthma in children and adults should be closely monitored by a doctor.
