Preventing eye allergy
Allergies are usually caused when the body overreacts to certain substances which would otherwise not cause a reaction in other people. Such substances are known as allergens and can trigger a variety of symptoms in the body. The body of each person reacts differently to allergens.
Some people may experience the symptoms on their skin, like rashes, breaking out in hives, and itching, while others may experience runny or stuffy nose, fever, and inflammation. A common symptom of allergies is a burning and itching sensation in the eyes. Such sensations can be caused due to foods or airborne particles.
However, since the eyes are extremely sensitive organs, allergies in the eyes should be avoided. Here are five ways you can prevent eye allergies:
1. The easiest way to keep yourself protected from eye allergies is to make sure that you avoid or at the very least minimize any possible exposure to allergens. This means that if your eyes are sensitive to certain foods, aromas or dust, you should keep your home free from contaminants. To protect yourself from dust, wear clear eye glasses on particularly windy days and keep your house clean and dust free all the time. Also, when you know what specific substances cause the allergic reaction, keep your distance from them.
2. Always keep an antihistamine easily accessible. If you are allergic to food items like peanuts or shellfish, you could at times unwittingly consume foods with these ingredients, despite the best precautions. To avoid the unpleasant reactions caused by allergies, always carry an oral anti allergy medication with you.
3. Eyes can often get irritated or feel sensitive when they are overexposed to rays from televisions or computers. To relax and moisturize the eyes, keep a saline solution handy. Use a clean, sterilized dropper to put saline drops in your eyes. This can help them relax. Use this at least thrice a day and whenever you come in from the outside.
4. Once a week, give your eyes a good wash using a saline rinse and an eye cup. Eye cups are available in medical stores and all you have to do to use them is to fill them with clean or saline water and lower your head to rest the eye socket onto the cup. Now raise your head along with the eye cup, tipping your head backwards so that your eyes can be cleaned thoroughly.
5. Always wash your hands before you touch your eyes or eye lids. You can accidentally make the allergens come into contact with your eye if you do not wash your hands often and touch your eyes.
