Pinched nerve in the shoulder
A pinched nerve in the shoulder occurs when the muscles, tendons, tissues and bone of the shoulder press against a nerve. This leads to a sensation of pain and can cause considerable discomfort to the individual. In order to alleviate the symptoms and prevent further damage to the nerve, it is advisable to seek early medical attention.
When the nerve undergoes strain from the surrounding structures, symptoms such as numbness, tingling, weakness and pain are likely to occur. Shoulder pinched nerve pain can be debilitating and the damage to the nerve is likely to get aggravated unless appropriate treatment is not sought. The condition commonly affects the back, shoulder and neck, but can also occur in other parts of the body.
It usually affects individuals engaged in manual work such as heavy lifting or construction. Such activities can place significant strain on the body, especially the shoulders. A pinched nerve can also occur due to conditions such as arthritis and diabetes. Some people suffer from a pinched nerve due to bad posture. This causes the surrounding tissues to compress the nerve. In individuals who are obese, the excessive amounts of tissue in the body can also exert strain on the nerve. The condition is also known to sometimes occur during pregnancy. A herniated spinal disc can also contribute to a pinched nerve.
Pinched nerve treatment may include intake of pain relieving medications, exercise and application of warm compresses. In most cases, a pinched nerve gets resolved in about a week’s time if the shoulder gets adequate rest and strenuous activity is avoided.
Symptoms of Pinched Nerve in Shoulder
Individuals suffering from a pinched nerve often complain of diminished sensation in the muscles surrounding the nerve. The nerve may be connected to several muscles and the compression could also result in symptoms such as numbness and tingling in the elbows and hands. A pinched shoulder nerve may even lead to muscle spasms in the shoulder. In rare cases, there may be swelling. The pain may vary in nature and severity. In some cases, there may be sharp pain experienced in the shoulder, while in other cases the pain may be more like a burning sensation. It could be restricted to a single spot or may involve the entire shoulder depending on where the nerve is located. A pinched nerve in the neck or shoulder may also lead to sensation of ‘pins and needles’. Compression of the nerve especially in the neck region may lead to muscle twitching.
In case the C5 nerve root is compressed, there is likely to some amount of numbness and pain in the shoulder. A pinched C6 nerve root may trigger radiating pain mainly in the person’s arm and even till the thumb. The wrist and arm muscles may also get affected. The main symptoms of C7 nerve compression is pain that travels down the arm. In such situations the middle finger may also go numb. A pinched C8 nerve may lead to discomfort in the outer portion of the hand.
Diagnosis of a pinched nerve is done after the doctor evaluates the individual’s medical history and the symptoms that the person experiences. He will also inquire about recent physical activity and will ask the individual to point out the exact location of the pain and the type of pain. In some cases, the individual may be asked to undergo an MRI or other medical tests if an underlying condition is suspected.
Pinched nerve relief can be obtained through different types of treatment. Anti-inflammatory drugs may be prescribed to relieve the pain. These may have some side effects and it is advisable to discuss them with the doctor beforehand. In some cases, medication is injected directly into the affected area in order to reduce inflammation and swelling. Heat packs are greatly beneficial in alleviating pain and discomfort arising from a pinched nerve. They help to relax the muscles and therefore ease the compression. Massage also helps to provide relief. It is important not to apply excessive pressure. Gentle massage, preferably done by a massage or physical therapist is most effective. The doctor may also advise the individual to engage in some simple neck and shoulder exercises at home. These will help to loosen the muscles in the area and this eases the strain on the nerve.
Since poor posture can worsen the problem of a pinched nerve, it is essential to maintain correct positioning of the back and shoulders. Hunching or slouching of the shoulders should be avoided while sitting or standing as this can restrict the flow of blood to the nerve. There are shoulder braces available which help to maintain proper posture. Adequate rest is also necessary for proper healing of a pinched nerve. The affected shoulder and arm should be kept in a relaxed position. It is best to avoid stretching the arm in any manner as this can worsen the symptoms.
