Mouth ulcers remedies
Mouth ulcers are open sores, found within the oral cavity. While there are different types of mouth ulcers, the two most common types are cold sores and aphthous ulcers. These ulcers are usually caused by infections, medical conditions, reactions to certain medications, physical trauma, and so on.
At times, ulcers could develop because of an overreaction by a person’s immune system. Mouth ulcers can be provoked by an illness or an injury, fatigue, stress, accidental biting, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, food allergies, sudden weight loss and hormonal changes. An ulcer, once formed, can be maintained by a secondary infection or an inflammation.
Treating an ulcer usually involves over the counter gels. The treatment of severe ulcers may require steroids or antibiotics, to be prescribed only by a professional.
Symptoms of Mouth Ulcers
The symptoms associated with mouth ulcers may vary, based on their cause. Some ulcers could start with a burning or stinging sensation, at the base of the sore. The sensation then progresses to a bump or spot, eventually turning into an open ulcer. The amount of time this procedure takes could depend on the cause of the ulcer. A developed ulcer in the mouth appears to be a yellow or white oval, surrounded by an inflamed red border. At times a white halo encircling the lesion may also be seen. Ulcers, which are normally painful, may also cause a swelling in the lymph nodes, below the jaw.
Home Remedies for Mouth Ulcers
Orange juice is very high in vitamin C and therefore, drinking a lot of orange juice can help prevent mouth ulcers, caused by vitamin deficiency.
Eat plenty of raw vegetables or fresh salad. Make sure to include raw onions in your diet, as they contain high amounts of sulfur, which is good in treating ulcers.
Increase your intake of food like bananas and yoghurt, to help cure the ulcers. Continue this until the ulcers are cured.
Massage your gums with coconut milk and honey, thrice a day. This enhances the mouth ulcer treatment.
Stay away from foods that are oily, spicy, processed or have jagged and sharp edges.
Gargle with a good mouthwash everyday. Apart from preventing mouth odor, it can help prevent ulcers. You could also try to gargle with hot and cold water, alternately.
In case of existing mouth ulcers, apply some toothpaste on the area, a couple of times a day for relief from the pain. You could also make your own mouth-rinse, using soda bicarbonate and water.
Apply some peppermint oil on the mouth ulcers for relief from the pain and discomfort.
