Manage chemotherapy side effects




Most individuals when diagnosed with cancer tend to experience a plethora of concerns and emotions about how the various cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation will affect their body.

There are however plenty of medications and natural treatments that will enable the cancer patient to manage and cope with the side effects and possibly even eliminate them gradually. One of the common side effects of chemotherapy is hair loss which is a major cause for concern in both men and women.

In such cases, one can opt for bandanas, hats, toupees, or wigs and even visit salons for consultations regarding techniques that would help enhance one’s self image and appearance at the time of the cancer treatment.

Nausea is also another one of the chemotherapy side effects and this can be reduced naturally by using glass utensils and cutlery while eating because many a times the taste of metal tends to trigger nausea in the patients undergoing chemotherapy. One of the home remedies for dealing with chemotherapy side effects is eating some ginger root, which is known to be highly effective against upset stomachs and also ease nausea.

Similarly another natural treatment for the nausea associated with chemotherapy is preparing and drinking some peppermint and ginger tea, which is known to help the stomach settle naturally. In order to know how to manage chemotherapy side effects you should realize that vomiting is also a side effect of chemotherapy and this can be addressed naturally by eating bland meals frequently during the day and this could include plain pasta, crackers, toast, and so on.

One should also try and avoid beverages as far as possible at least an hour before and after ones meals. Foods should also be ideally eaten at room temperature and any fluids should be had in slow and small sips. To handle diarrhea, which is another side effect of chemotherapy, one may increase the consumption of applesauce, bananas, plain yogurt, chicken breast, mashed potatoes, and turkey as these foods are rich in fiber, which tends to have a binding effect on the stools and also helps the digestive process. Similarly, one should also avoid caffeine, dairy products, and dried fruits, as well as both hot and cold beverages, as they can stimulate the motility of the colon thereby worsening the diarrhea at times. Fatigue is another common side effect of chemotherapy which can be treated naturally by taking short frequent naps as far as possible. One should eat foods that are rich in B12 such as fish and meat.
