How to avoid catching a flu or cold
A common cold and flu are some of the most common ailments that have been known to affect men, women and children all over the world. While these afflictions can affect adults and children, they are a lot more common in children than they are in adults. Studies indicate that these illnesses are one of the highest cause for absenteeism in schools.
Neither the cold, nor the flu is a particularly serious condition, but they can lead to some uncomfortable symptoms.
Moreover, they are highly contagious, which is why it is important for people to limit contact with a person who already has a common cold or the flu. However, this may not always be possible, as there are several instances of children living in a house, where one sibling already suffers from these ailments.
Therefore, it is up to the parents, baby sitters and other caregivers to ensure that the condition does not spread from one child to the other. Studies also indicate the flu and cold are both more common in certain seasons, because of the presence of the virus in the air. Hence, children can contract these problems, even if no one else at home has them. Fortunately, there are several ways in which people can reduce the risks of catching a cold and the flu. Given below are a few tips on how to avoid catching a cold or flu:
Washing hands: This is probably one of the most effective methods of preventing the transmission of common colds and other viruses. Not just children, but even adults can pass on the germs and therefore all people should wash their hands are regular intervals and especially after spending time outdoors. Hence, adults should wash their hands immediately, soon after they go to the gym, spend time shopping or travel by public transport, since it is very easy to pick up a virus at these places. Fortunately, washing the hands often can help destroy any viruses that have been acquired from any infected surfaces. If it is not possible to wash hands, then using a hand sanitizer or a wet wipe is also advisable.
Using disposable items: In public places, it is best to avoid utensils that have been used by others, since they may not have been cleaned properly. Hence, in such places, it is best to use disposable cups, plates and spoons, when eating out. This also applies to towels that people use to wipe their hands with. Germs can survive for a very long time on cloth towels which is why they can be passed on to other people. People who visit public rest rooms should use paper towels instead. Those who have a cold should refrain from using a handkerchief and should opt for tissues instead.
Reducing stress: Strange as this may sound, stress can cause a person to suffer from various ailments, including a cold or the flu. This is because stress can cause the immune system to weaken, which is why the virus can easily infect the body. Hence, stress reducing techniques such as yoga, meditation and deep breathing or even exercising can help people prevent colds and flu.
Hygienic measures: It is absolutely essential for all people to ensure that their environments are clean at all times, and free of allergens and infection-causing germs. The use of household cleansing products that are high in chemicals should be avoided, as could trigger off allergies, thereby increasing the risks of a cold and perhaps even the flu.
Following a healthy diet: Several people argue that there is no direct relation between eating healthy foods and preventing a cold. However, eating the right food can boost the immune system, thereby enabling it to fight off infections such as a cold and the flue. Therefore, people are usually advised to increase their consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as whole grains, cereals, lean meat, nuts and seed. Foods that are fried, high in sugar and fattening should be strictly avoided. Many people try to boost the overall functioning of their body by taking vitamin supplements. However, it is best for people to get their intake of vitamin from sources of healthy foods, instead of any supplements.
Drinking a lot of water: Since dehydration or lack of adequate water in the body could interfere with the functioning of the immune system, people are advised to drink the daily recommended amount of water each day.
Getting adequate rest: Studies indicate that most of the children living across the United States do not get an adequate amount of rest and sleep, due to their day to day activities. This could cause the child’s system to weaken and become prone to diseases and infection. Hence, parents should make sure that their kids get to sleep for no less than 8 hours a day and rest for another one or two hours during the day.
Flu shots: The most effective way of preventing minor ailments is by getting immunized against them. Contrary to what most people believe, flu vaccinations are not just for children; elderly people can are also advised to go in for them, in order to prevent colds, flus and other similar health problems.
The ways and means on how to avoid catching a cold or flu given above are quite safe, as long as they are used correctly.
However, it is best for all parents to check with a doctor or a child specialist, before using any of them for children. These tips on preventing a cold and the flu only reduce the chances of a child catching them; however, a child may still end up catching a cold or the flu, in spite of following these steps carefully. Fortunately, there are several treatment options as well as home remedies that can be used to relieve the uncomfortable symptoms of these conditions in a child. Nevertheless, it is best to have the child checked by the doctor, before deciding to use any home remedy or over the counter medicine to relieve the condition.
