For keratosis pilaris remedies at home
What is keratosis pilaris? Keratosis pilaris is a skin disorder caused when the follicles on the skin are infected by the accumulation of keratin. This is non-contagious disorder of genetic origins.
This condition is also known as chicken skin due to its appearance. Keratin is an insoluble protein that is very strong and fibrous. This protein is required to strengthen the nails, hair, and the skin.
Its accumulation in the hair follicles of the skin causes a very unsightly appearance. Though the condition is not harmful for health, it is rather unsightly. The disease is genetic, but shows itself only during adolescence. Women are found to be more likely to have this disease than men. Once an adolescent has this disease, it cannot be cured.
There is no specific treatment for keratosis pilaris. Medical science has not been able to find a definitive keratosis pilaris remedy. However, there are home remedies for keratosis pilaris that can be used to make the symptoms appear less obvious.
You can find a good keratosis pilaris natural cure that can be very beneficial in dealing efficiently with the condition. Though none of the home remedies for keratosis pilaris can treat the condition permanently, they can lessen its effects on the skin. Exfoliation and scrubbing are usually the most common techniques for keeping the symptoms of keratosis pilaris minimal.
Causes and symptoms of keratosis pilaris: There are no causes of keratosis pilaris except for excessive keratinization. Though the skin continues to have bumps throughout the affected person’s life, dryness in the skin during the winter months makes it worse. The condition, however, is self-limiting and tends to improve as the affected person gets older. Yet, there are some exceptions to this. Hypersensitivity of the skin and genetic factors together contribute to this disease. Certain conditions like eczema, allergies, asthma, rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis increase the risk of keratosis pilaris. The symptoms of the condition include slight thickening of the skin and presence of red colored bumps on the skin that makes it rough. These bumps often appear as small pimples. In some cases, small hairs become coiled and trapped under the bump on the skin. Though the condition mostly affects the back and the upper arms, some people also experience this on their buttocks, thighs and the face.
Since the condition resembles acne a lot, it is easy to mistake the bumpy and uneven skin for acne. Generally though, the condition is classified as a seborrheic condition. This often leads to dry and itchy skin as well. Though it is classified as a seborrheic condition, it is not caused by over activity of the sebaceous glands.
Treatment of keratosis pilaris: The best treatment for the condition is to leave it alone. Since the condition is self-limiting, it tends to get treated on its own. However, if you have ugly and unsightly bumps on your face, you may need to have some kind of treatment. The treatment for keratosis pilaris in children can yield better results than the treatment of the condition in adults. The treatment for keratosis pilaris on the face is important because of cosmetic concerns. Since there are no medical treatments available, most people have to work with home remedies for keratosis pilaris. While the treatment for keratosis pilaris on the legs can wait, the same cannot be said about the condition that affects the face and other parts of the body that remain uncovered. Some of the home remedies for keratosis pilaris treatment are listed below.
There are a lot of over the counter medications available for the treatment of keratosis pilaris scars as well as other symptoms. Lactic acid and glycolic acid based ointments are usually most successful in treating the condition. These acidic ointments are able to dissolve the bumps in the hair follicles. However, these ointments are not a permanent solution to the condition.
Regular cleansing and exfoliation of the skin helps in removing dead skin cells and improving blood circulation. This lowers the risk of clogging of keratin in the hair follicles. Since the clogging of keratin is the primary cause of this condition, using exfoliates regularly can help improve the condition.
One of the best home remedies for keratosis pilaris is vitamin A. You can add vitamin A to your diet in the form of supplements. Multivitamin pills with vitamin A can also help you take care of the condition. However, before you begin consuming the multivitamins, be sure to check in with your doctor.
Increased intake of the essential fatty acids can work well for treating keratosis pilaris. Fatty acids make for an excellent balanced nutrition in the diet and have been proven to be therapeutic for the condition.
Sit in the sunshine for at least half an hour every day. Take care to wear a sunscreen or a sunblock to prevent damage caused by the sun. Sitting in the sun can naturally help in treating the condition.
Keep your skin moisturized at all times. Following a regular regimen of cleansing and moisturizing can help in making the condition better.
In winters, keratosis pilaris is known to be worse. Keep a humidifier in the room so that your skin does not dry off.
Using a mild soap-free cleanser can help keep the skin soft and supple. Keeping the skin healthy is one of the top priorities in this condition, since it helps control the symptoms.
Include flaxseeds and hemp in your diet as these contain the essential fatty acids that can help dissolve the keratosis bumps naturally.
Apart from the home remedies for keratosis pilaris, there are many other treatments which can be useful for the condition.
Hair removal using laser technology and pulse dry treatments using a laser are two of the most commonly used cosmetic treatments for keratosis pilaris. You could also use topical retinoids that help in dissolving the bumps, rub a pumice stone on the affected area, use corticosteroids in the form of topical ointments, use soap-free cleansers, and apply ammonium lactate formulations and urea.
