Toothache in pregnancy time
It is common for women to suffer from toothache during pregnancy. Toothache during pregnancy is mainly due to sore gums, which are either inflamed or infected. It is important to look for immediate treatment, because if left untreated, toothache can be extremely painful.
During pregnancy, the rising hormone levels in the woman’s body irritate the gums and cause swelling. It is important to maintain good dental hygiene, and ensure that one’s teeth are absolutely clean. Toothache is excruciating and serious problems could occur due to a tooth or gum infection.
Tooth and gum infections in pregnant females can lead to:
Preterm labor/premature birth
Low birth weight of the newborn
Possibility for mother to develop gestational diabetes
It is usually advised that the pregnant mother opt for natural remedies instead of taking strong medicines. Given below are few safe and effective home remedies that provide natural and long-lasting toothache relief.
Rinse your mouth with warm salt water at periodic intervals. This helps to remove the bacteria from your mouth, gums, and teeth.
Brush and floss your teeth carefully after every meal, ensuring that no food is stuck between your teeth; as this is the root cause of bacterial growth.
Rinse your mouth with honey, ginger, and lemon tea, which has antibacterial properties and also restores the gums and teeth to a normal healthy state, providing relief from toothache.
Use sage tea as a mouthwash, which is an effective method of treating gum diseases. Make tea by using dried or fresh leaves in boiling water and rinse your mouth after cooling it.
Use clove to get relief from pregnancy toothache. Clove serves as a painkiller, and you can directly crush the cloves in between your teeth and let its juice flow. Alternatively, soak a cotton ball in the clove oil and place it over the infected tooth.
Use hot and cold packs alternatively; the cold packs provide a numbing effect to the infected tooth and the heat drains out the abscess, if any.
Eat a good and balanced diet, including calcium and other vitamin supplements.
Avoid foods that have high sugary content as sugar increases the plaque and tartar build up on the tooth, worsening the condition.
If you are suffering with bleeding gums and bad breath due to gum disease, include lemon, oranges, or other fruits containing vitamin C in your diet. Alternatively, you can drink fresh lime juice or orange juice.
