Physical Fitness Facts has statistics and some uncommon fitness facts you may not be aware of.

 

These interesting statistics are from the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

 

Adults

 

Adults need about 30 minutes of physical activity at least 5 days per week, children and teens need 60 minutes (its okay to segment that activity throughout the day).
About 30% of adults are getting the recommended physical activity.
32.5% of adults take part in regular leisure time physical activity.
36% of adults do not take part in regular leisure time physical activity.
37% of adults are not physically active at all.
Heart Disease is the leading cause of death among men and women in the United States.
Approximately 26.6 million adults are diagnosed with heart disease each year.
Cancer, Stroke, and Chronic Lower Respiratory Diseases are the next 3 leading causes of death in the United States. Diabetes is the 6th.
41 million Americans are estimated to have pre-diabetes.
Over 22,000 people die from alcohol-induced deaths (excludes driving and homicides).
62% of adults age 20 or older were overweight or obese (2005-2006).
34% of adults age 20 or older were obese (2005-2006).
83% of adults and 90% of children had contact with a health professional in the last year.

Men

 

Life expectancy is 75.1 years.
34% of men age 18 and over engage in regular leisure time physical activity.
23% are smokers age 18 and over.
From 2003-2006 32% men age 20 and older were obese.

Women

 

Life expectancy is 80.2 years.
30% of women age 18 and over engage in regular leisure time physical activity.
18% are smokers age 18 and over.
From 2003-2006 35% of women age 20 and older were obese.

Older People

 

25% of adults age 65 and older are in fair or poor health.
9.3% are smokers age 65 and older.
Percent who are obese.
Men ages 65-74 33%.
Men ages 75 and over 24%.
Women ages 65-74 36%.
Women ages 75 and over 24%.
23% of adults age 60 and older have been diagnosed with diabetes.

Obesity:

 

BMI with a range of 25 to 29.9 you are considered overweight
BMI that’s greater than 30 you are considered obese
The World Health Organization projected that 1.6 million adults are overweight and 400 million adults are obese.
