Dos and don’ts- multiple piercings
Whenever a body piercing is done, there is a danger of infection. This is not a very high risk, but the possibility of infection cannot be ruled out since the piercing does inflict a wound on the body. Proper treatment and care after the piercing will ensure that the risk of infection and other complications is reduced.
Here are some tips to help you deal with a body piercing in a better manner.
Firstly, it is important that the piercing be performed by a professional. The instruments used should be clean and sterile.
If you have any doubts about the equipment or method being used, it is advisable to refrain from going ahead with the procedure. Have it done only when you are comfortable with the professional and the procedure. The professional is likely to provide you with some aftercare instructions. It is advisable to follow these instructions closely as this will help to relieve any discomfort that may arise after the procedure and will also prevent infection from developing. You can also visit your professional a few times after the procedure to make sure that the area is healing well. If there is something wrong, you will be able to detect it early and get the necessary treatment. One should also be able to recognize signs of infection. If there is excessive redness, pain, discharge or bleeding, it may be indicative of an infection. As soon as these signs are observed, seek medical help so that further aggravation does not take place.
Maintain good hygiene of the piercing site and also keep the jewelry used on that site clean. Avoid touching the area as you may transfer dirt and bacteria from your hands on to the site. Also keep your hair or clothes away from the area in order to avoid causing friction or irritation. Also do not allow anyone else to touch the area. If you are opting for multiple piercings at one sitting, it is essential to ensure that the piercings are not so close to each other that the skin between the two areas may tear. Have them spaced well apart and remember to maintain good hygiene in both areas. Some professionals suggest that a bit of oil be rubbed around the area to allow easy movement of the jewelry. This will prevent the jewelry from sticking to the newly pierced flesh. Applying an antiseptic solution around the areas daily will also ensure that the risk of infection is minimized.
