Cures of excessive sweating

Hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating not only affects an individual physically but also psychologically. Physically it may result in dehydration, clammy hands, skin infections etc and other such conditions. Psychologically it may completely devastate an individual’s level of self confidence and social interactions.

Hyperhidrosis tends to affect areas like the palms, feet, armpits and groin area where there are maximum amount of sweat glands.

The cures for excessive sweating are broadly classified as Obtrusive methods and non obtrusive methods. Non Obtrusive cures for hyperhidrosis involve the use of antiperspirants.

Mild cases of excessive sweating may be handled by use of over-the counter antiperspirants as they seem to serve the purpose. However, for those with persistent symptoms of excessive sweating, the use of prescription strength anti perspirants, lotions, creams etc and the like are recommended as they usually contain chloride hexahydrate and are hence recommended by dermatologists. They tend to clog the sweat glands pores and hence prevent excessive sweating. Oral medications or anticholinergics are also available for excessive sweating. Another non obtrusive method of treating excessive sweating is Iontophoresis wherein electric current is applied to the skin viausing tap water especially targeting the sweat glands. This process is conducted mostly in the armpits to thicken the hair growth thereby preventing the sweat from reaching one’s clothes. These sessions last from 10 to 20 minutes and each are usually conducted 3-4 times a week. On the other hand obtrusive methods of treating hyperhidrosis include botox treatment which involves botolinum toxin injections administered directly into the affected areas to get temporary relief from excessive sweating for up to 6 months. Surgery is typically the last resort in combating hyperhidrosis. Sympathectomy basically involves permanently stopping the nerve supply to the sweat glands in the skin. During this procedure, an endoscopic instrument is inserted among the ribs and the lungs are dilated so that the nerves are easily visible. Though this surgical procedure is highly effective, it is also considered to be very risky. Another variation of this surgery involves placing a titanium clip on the sympathetic nerves to disrupt the signal to the sweat glands.

Some helpful natural treatments to avoid excessive sweating would involve eating a balanced diet rich in vegetables and fruits and keeping the body well hydrated by consuming 6-8 glasses of water a day. Magnesium also helps in destroying the toxins present in the body thereby causing it to sweat less. Vitamin B should also be incorporated in one’s diet as helps in the internal cooling of the body thereby reducing the amount of sweat.
