Children obesity

Childhood obesity is a raising concern these days as the number of children suffering from obesity has risen three times since 1980. A child is called obese when he/she is well above the normal weight for his or her age and height. This could lead the child to severe health related problems that were once confined to adults such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. This epidemic of obesity in children is mainly due to eating unhealthy foods and living an inactive lifestyle.

Intake of just 100 calories (equals to 8 ounces of a soft drink) above daily requirements will typically result in a 10-pound weight gain over one year.

The most common cause for childhood obesity is Genetic factor. Children whose parents are obese are 80% more prone to obesity.

The other causes are diseases neurological and endocrinological diseases which cause about 1 percent of childhood obesity cases due to changes in metabolism and hormonal levels. Lack of exercise, stress due to poverty family problems, abuse, moving, divorce, and other life-changing events contribute to obesity in children. Now a day’s children prefer eating fast food rather than healthy food. This is one of the major reasons that also lead them to obesity. Medication antidepressants, insulin, thiazolidenedions, and steroids cause weight gain can also cause obesity in a child. The television, video games computer which do not have any physical activity can result in obesity in a child. Some children overeat to overcome issue or problems, such as stress or boredom.

If you notice your child is overweight; do not wait for an angel to tell you as it could lead to a lot of health problems. A child health is best taken care of by the parents. Encourage your child to eat healthy foods, by you as well eating healthy food.

Healthy food as well can be very tasty only if you take the efforts to search on the net you would get a lot of recipes that children would love. Increase the physical activity in your family for example you could have a time where the entire family exercises or goes for some kind of sports. This will build the child interest in sports and also will help in loose weight. In case the child is obese due to medication consult your doctor for a healthy diet or if any alternative medication can be taken. Meditation or yoga is also good for your child as it does develop the self esteem and self confidence of your child.
