Bone infection- osteomyelitis

What is osteomyelitis? Osteomyelitis (bone infection) is often caused by a bacteria. When medical treatment is not sought for the condition, the bone will be destroyed.

The infection may happen to anybody and at any age. Bone infection is also caused by sickle cell anemia, or the presence of a foreign object in the body. An imbedded bullet or a screw to hold a broken bone can trigger ostemyelitis.

Use of intravenous drugs like heroin, untreated severe sinus infection, and diabetes are other risk factors. Untreated tissue infections will also trigger the onset of osteomyelitis.

The entry of the bacteria into the bloodstream and the transfer of bacteria from nearby soft tissue infection to the bone cause osteomyelitis. The Staphylococcus aureus bacteria will reach the thigh, bones of the lower leg, and bones of the upper arm.

Children have extensive blood circulation; this makes them susceptible to the disease. In adults, osteomyelitis will affect the vertebrae. Drug addicts will have manifestations of the disease in the clavicle or pubic bone. Diabetics are most likely to develop osteomyelitis because of slow healing wounds.

In children, the symptoms of osteomyelitis will be pain in the injured or affected bone, fever, and chills. The affected area will also be tender. Adults will experience a dull aching pain in the back. There will be pain in the chest, abdomen, arm, or leg. The pain is a consequence of pressure on a nerve root connected to these areas. If the osteomyelitis is caused by tuberculosis, the thoracic spine will be affected severely. Since osteomyelitis is the presence of inflammation of bone and marrow, the disease can be debilitating.

If you’re experiencing bone pain and fever, you must consult a physician. It’s advisable to visit him as soon as possible since osteomyelitis can worsen quickly and become harder to get rid of. You may have to undergo a physical examination and be inquired about any new injuries to those areas experiencing pain. He may perform a couple of blood tests to determine if the count of your white blood cells is more than normal, which can be a symptom of infection. He will then search for signs of any probable inflammation and infection in your body. Medical history shall also be traced to identify your family’s and your medical history, your previous and present medications, allergies, and any health issues.

Treatment for osteomyelitis (bone infection) will require strong antibiotics, which will be given intravenously or orally.

Adults will be given 6 weeks of intravenous antibiotics while children will be given intravenous treatment which will be followed by oral medications.

Many people are now turning to home remedies to relieve joint pains. Apple cider vinegar has been proven to be an effective pain reliever. Papaya seed tea, powdered peppered heated with sesame oil and mashed garlic cloves and liquid glucosamine are effective remedies for joint pains. To restore health to the nerves along the tendons, Vitamin B12 is a safe and healthful alternative. Proper diet should be observed for a faster route to recovery.
