Suggestions for a Beginner's routine?

Postby GorillaMonsoon » Wed Mar 07, 2012 4:51 pm

Hi I'm just starting to workout any suggestions for a good, simple routine for beginners? Which exercises and how many of each?

I would seriously recommend that you check out the Rippetoes routine. It is the absolute best way to make progress as a beginner. If you really want to learn a lot, I suggest reading "Starting Strength". It gives detailed descriptions of beginners routines, how to perform the lifts, and lots of other stuff.

You really don't want to complicate things at first. I would suggest doing full body workouts such as Rippetoes for at least the first six months. Your number one priority should be to gain strength and to build up a decent base.

Thanks for posting this. I am still a beginner. I want results and it can be hard to figure things out on your own. I will try out your suggestions.

For a beginner, I would recommend that you start without weights and learn each of the exercises and how to correctly perform them. The exercises are only effective when they are performed correctly. Once you master the techniques then you can begin to add weights a little at a time.

Thank-you for the advice. I will check these out. I am actually a woman and have become interested in building some muscles but not to overdoit since I am a girl. Would there be tips here, or is this just for men?

I checked the Rippetoes routine and it sure looks great. I have been working out with no proper routines and it's been hard. Thanks for the tip!

Thanks for posting this, I am also a beginner and need to find a good routine. I mainly want to work my stomach and thighs. I need to get rid of some love handles that I gained from having children. Any good suggestions for that?
Just keep smiling...

What are your goals? Do you want to build muscle and lose fat? I would recommend doing basic exercises like pull ups, press ups, squats, deadlift, overhead press, dips, rows and bench press.

Your routine could look like this:

Deadlift
Press ups
Pull ups

Bench Press
Rows
Dips

Squats
Chin Ups
Overhead Press

A Simple beginner's Routine.
You will do 3 work outs per week on non consecutive days. The first work out is your heavy work out. The second work out is your medium work out, use 10% less weight for your work sets. The final work out for the week is your lite work out, use 20% less weight.
