Anybody Else Think Fan Voting is Stupid?

They really need to change the voting system for the All Star Game, to at least diminish the strength of the fans vote. It wouldn't be a big deal if there weren't big implications of the game, being that the winning team gets home field advantage in the World Series. The Giants fans got multiple players in as starters that didn't deserve it, taking away from some of the reserves who are having amazing seasons this year. I think the votes should go strictly by stats and not by popularity.

If all the major sports leagues did away with your all star games, and only kept the teams as a fictitious thing(like the Associated Press All Pro rosters.) than yeah, the stats should be the benchmark exclusively.

But these games, no matter the stipulations added to them, are for the fans. Everything is a popularity contest. If some of these lesser known players stay consistent and put up number for multiple seasons, they'll get their just due. It never fails. I know I wouldn't wanna watch if the starters were a bunch of young guys who haven't been great long enough for me to know who the heck they were. Not every fan devotes all their time to a sport, so you can't expect some of these "deserving" baseball players to get the respect that a known player gets.

You can watch all of the people that didn't get in anytime you want: in their games. The All Star is for the fans and who they want to see that night. If the people that were left off were that great, then their fans should've voted them in.

These games are for the fans. If your favorite players never made it into the game would you watch the game? I know for me I would not want to watch the games at all, but for others it would not matter that much.

Are you nuts is the first question I have. Fan voting is a great thing to have because it provides some form of interaction which may be lacking. So I have to say I think the fan voting is what keeps the game so interesting.

The question though is if it's truly the players the fans as a whole want to see, or a small group that organizes and votes the most. Teams with the highest attendance have an advantage, even though that has been mitigated a little with online voting. It's a tough call, but something tells me fans get sick of seeing the same players every year, especially in a year when that player is struggling.

Who cares if it's a voting block? The point is that the fans voted and if there are other fans that feel put out, then they need to get it together the next year. It's only serious or unfair when people don't get their guy in.

The fans need and deserve some sort of input in the line-up of these games. Yes, it's a popularity contest, and, yes, the voting can be easily influenced. However, I can't think of a better way to handle the voting without messing with fan input.

Good but lesser known or recognized players aren't what sell tickets, unfortunately.

Overrated, flashy, popular stars are.

They are only overrated to the rival team's fans. There is a reason for those stats on the back of the baseball cards and those stats are what make them all stars. To begrudge them that honor because "my favorite" didn't get in is silly. If they are really your favorite, do more voting.
