Homerun Derby?

Homerun Derby?

Who do you think will end up winning the Homerun Derby this year? I know the same players seem to win each year, but this year may be different so who do you think will win it?

I am not sure who is even going to participate this year. I am just happy that many of the major name players will participate because of the fear of injury so many players have. If they drop out, though, it would not be any good at all.

I know who won't win and that is Bryce Harper. It's really a shame that Matt Kemp has already and publicly ruled him out as a possible selection. It's a shame how these dudes are treating this kid. I cannot stand jealous, catty and petty men.

It is hard to tell, but it seems like year after year a player you don't expect gets deep into contending for the crown. Someone who hits homeruns in the regular season, but isn't a heavy favorite to win the derby.

Prince Fielder is simply a monster! He hit the top three home runs in terms of distance last night. Jose Bautista can pull the ball like few others, though. Good thing he told the catcher to set up inside so he could launch homeruns down the left field line- I thought for sure he would win this year. Prince does it all as a vegetarian though!

I don't like the fact that the "team captains" choose who gets to participate in the home run derby. I think maybe this should be an opportunity to invite additional players to the All-Star Weekend. Take the top five home run hitters in each league and send them. For those that aren't on the All-Star team they participate in the derby, but not the game itself. Would be another reward for players having strong seasons that may not get enough votes to make the team.

I can't say that I've ever been a fan of the Home Run Derby. Merely hitting the ball out of the park isn't a home run to me. You've got to have the trill of the crowd, the threat of a strike-out and the pressure of competition in order for there to be a home run.

Anything else is just a cheap spectacle to me.
