5 Weeks out of the gym

Postby Dazoreilly » Fri Jun 15, 2012 12:43 am

I've not been gym for 5 weeks, nearly 6 weeks now and I was wondering if I should carry on with 5-3-1 or go for something like starting strength? Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Why wouldn't you just continue with what you were doing before? Maybe, drop down in the weight just a little if you are concerned with trying to get back into the groove of things. You can start a new plan, but why not go back in, get everything back together and then start your new regimen.

As Sugarhill says, you don't need to start a new program because you haven't trained for weeks. I would advise you to ease in gradually, especially for the first week. Start off conservatively when selecting the weight to use. You should be back to your usual strength levels after 3 weeks.

Starting Strength is a pretty good program but if your making gains on your old program no reason to change it. Since you've been out of the gym for a while maybe start a lower weight than your used to so you dont pull something and work your way back up in weight :)

I would do what you were doing before. I know this may mean lightening up some on your lifting or running. However, it will allow you to get back into shape rather easily.

Muscle memory is real and it works. After I was in an accident, I didn't lift for 2 months, even though I wanted too. Just go back and lift lighter, than you would normally, for about a week. Once you feel out how your body is responding, get back to your old routine.

Continue with your program. Lower the weight and build up from there. You'll be back where you left in no time 8-)

I started off where i left off. It was seriously tough but i got through.
The first week i was really sore for about 3 days after each bodypart, now though im on my 3rd week and all is going well.

I'm sorry to hear how long you have been out of the gym, that would kill me inside to not be able to workout for that long. What I would do is stick with your old routine, but start small and work up to what you were doing before since you have most likely lost a lot of strength and probably some size.

Congrats! That's all that happens. It's good that you started where you left off. That's what it seems to be, with soreness. I've noticed that if I missed a week or two and go hard, that body part hurts for 2-3 days after, too.
