UFC Scoring

I have only watched these briefly in previews and while channel surfing. So I have a very limited amount of exposure to the shows. How are these scored and how is a winner determined?

Title bouts are 5 rounds while supporting bouts are 3 rounds. The bout is scored per round just like in boxing where the one who dominates the round is scored 10 and the other fighter is given a 9.

Also to add on what he said ^

Non title fights that headline are 5 rounds too now which has recently been changed. This friday when rich franklin fights the axe murderer in Brazil, It will be a 5 round war.

The scoring is pretty much the same as boxing, which has led to some really controversial decisions. I believe UFC should score their fights the way Pride did. Instead of judging according to individual round, the fight is scored as a whole. I believe this will lead to better judging.

Glad you understand the scoring system a little bit better. I do think this sport needs major change when it comes to scoring fights.

It's pretty much harder to score in UFC than in boxing especially if the fight is mostly on the ground with fighters exchanging takedowns. With only 3 rounds, it's really hard to conclude who wins so there's more chances of unexpected wins in UFC.

The winner can be determined if they submit their opponent, if they knockout their opponent, if their opponent can't fight due to an injury or cut, or the fight goes to a decision. If it goes to a decision, then it is a 10-9 point system. A fighter can either win a round with a 10-9, a 10-10, or a 10-8. 10-8's are usually rewarded if the fighter dominates the other for the entire round. If they win all three rounds, they win by unanimous decision.
