Working Out in Bed

Postby SEA81 » Wed May 23, 2012 6:42 pm

This is going to sound crazy, but I've been nursing a knee injury over the last few weeks, and I was getting tired of not being able to work out. So, I Googled around a little bit and found out that this is a problem for lots of folks, and one way people get around it is by working out in bed! Most of it's upper body work, but you can do all kinds of things. (Just don't watch yourself in a mirror; it's mortifying.) Anyway, it's actually helped me lose a little weight and tone my upper body, so I just thought I'd throw that tip out there!! There are lots of ideas on YouTube, and I even took a favorite workout DVD that I do and did it while sitting on the bed.

Well, unless you're doing something completely outrageous, you could just as easily go to the gym or wherever you work out and sit on a chair to do the workout. Just a suggestion.

My knee problem was extremely painful, going up and down stairs was painful and even getting up from a chair hurt, so going to a gym and sitting on a chair would hurt too after i am done and getting up. Surprisingly the pain went away after a few days so now i do not need to stay away from the gym anymore =D.

You can train your upper body if you have a knee injury. You can do press ups, dips, pull ups, seated shoulder press, tricep and bicep exercises. For cardio training I would try swimming. Swimming is low-impact, excellent for maintaining fitness during knee rehabilitation.

I don't think this is odd. I just think it's an adjustment until you are physically able to go back to regular workouts. It's a form of physical therapy. They have patients in hospitals do physical therapy, and that's not so different.

Go to Youtube and type in "workout in bed" and several suggestions come up.

Some of this could not be done in a chair. Either the chair would break or you'd break your back. Ha! Plus, I would not want to do some of this stuff in public. I'm working not just my upper body, but my waist, hips, core and even my legs to some extent. Some of it I do in a near-split position, some of it laying down, etc.

Someone suggested swimming - I have been doing that, but I'm still unable to kick my leg well enough to swim proper laps.

This sounds like it would be a great exercise plan for me. I know I cannot take a heavy workout anymore because of my back. I can do some of the exercises you mentioned with the bed and this can really help me out!

I suppose this takes into account that some exercise is better than no exercise.

I have never tried working out in bed. To be honest, I thought you meant something else entirely when I first read the thread title. :D

What they make injured athletes do is work only on the upper body, if the lower body is injured. This way, you do not go completely out of shape. If the knee is giving you issues, it might better to pursue that type of working out.

Although, if you are seeing respectable gains from the bed than go for it!
