Do Offensive Linemen Get Enough Credit

Do Offensive Linemen Get Enough Credit

Postby Isabellas2007 » Tue May 08, 2012 3:49 pm

When you look at the piles you have to wonder who is pushing it. Then you see the little running back squirt out and think he is doing a great job. However, do the offensive linemen get the credit they deserve for the work they perform? I know my husband was a linemen in high school and they were often overlooked as the ones who did not do much. However, without them the game would never happen, so do they get enough credit for their job?

Offensive Lineman never get enough credit. It is so easy to see a team fall apart without a good offensive line. Take the Bears for example, Jay Cutler has literally 0 seconds inside the pocket before he has to start running. He is a perfectly fine athlete but he just always has to run. If you take a team like the Packers then Aaron Rodgers has all the time in the world to pass the ball. They are definitely the most underpaid position in the league.

I couldn't pick an O linemen out of a lineup. I'd probably mistake him for somebodies bodyguard, which is kinda what their purpose is anyhow. If there was a stat for those guys, they'd get more credit than they do now.

Jersey Sales wouldn't increase though.

There are o-line stats but they aren't talked about too much and they are based mainly on the entire line and not just an individual player. The most common ones I can think of are sacks allowed, QB hits, and tackles for loss? However I thought there was a stat that also counted the number of times an offensive lineman got a pancake (just knocking someone on their butt), but maybe that was something I dreamed up haha

They will never get enough credit as long as they not the ones scoring the touchdowns and making the big hits. They are so huge now though that as a weight lifter you have to admire their dedication and also their general body mass. They eat so much and they are all also really big now. I've noticed a trend in linemen in the NFL recently. It's gone from really fat and occasionally jacked to now where they are all in incredible shape for their weight.

It's rather impressive really, with their equipment on they look fat and out of shape but in reality a lot of them can run 40s around 5 seconds which is crazy. Before the draft they do profiles on a all players and in the 2007 NFL Combine, the offensive lineman average was somewhere between 21% and 24% body fat (Crazy for their size!)

That is crazy for the size they have! I know that is about what my husband is now and he cannot do half of the stuff they do! Let alone run a five second forty!

I played line in high school and we never got any credit. The QB and RB would always get the girls, while the linemen were left with the heavy girls. Then the other players would always blame us if they got hit to hard.

They get the credit from those that mean the most to them, their teammates. Offensive linemen are used to playing outside of the spotlight. Actually, they hope the spotlight stays off of them. Typically if it is on them it's for a holding penalty, false start or getting beat off the line by a defensive lineman or linebacker.
