What type of protein powders are there?

Postby greenplankton » Fri May 04, 2012 6:28 am

I am new to bodybuilding and fitness workouts so I would like to find out from you what kind of protein powders there are available. I heard that protein powder have egg-based materials in them, so for people who are allergic to egg, does that mean that they are unable to consume protein powder or are there those without any eggs in them?

Can you guys also recommend other supplements or brands to take note of? :D

There is protein from milk (both cow and goat) as well as protein derived from plants. So do you happen to have this allergy?

Look into creatine and in general the threads on this site, you will learn a lot and if you have a question just ask the forum.

An egg is one of the most complete and versatile foods available. It has a valuable role in providing a healthy diet for all and especially bodybuilders. We all know the importance of protein in the muscle building process, without protein, your muscles will simply not grow.Eggs contain about 6 grams of high quality protein.

If you are allergic to egg, then proteins with egg in them are a no go. It's that simple.

There are other types of protein, most do come from whey. Ie. Casien. Whey protein isolate. Concentrate, peptides, hydrolyzed whey etc.

The main difference in all of these is basically the bioavailability in the protein. There are fast digesting and slow digesting proteins. Some good for post workout others good for meal replacements.

Best thing to do is decide what type of protein you're looking for then go from there.

If all else fails stick with the best source. Whole foods! Grab that steak, chicken, fish, or any lean meat.

some proteins also have odd effects. its reported that soy protein increases estrogen in women and can lead to cancer.
and as others have said allergies matter if your alergic to eggs i would go with a whey protein isolate

There is a lot of different types of protein powders. The main ones are Whey Protein which is derived from powdered milk usually and absorbs very fast into your body. Casein Protein is another which is slower digesting and is good to use before bed so your body isn't in a catabolic state during sleep. Just to name a few. I'd look at bodybuilding.com to get a breakdown on all the different types there since there is more than just what I listed.

If you go to a site like true protein there are tons of options. They have this instantized beef protein now. You want to stay clear of soy proteins if you can. They allow custom mixes too.

As far as a brand choice, I'd go with Optimum Nutrition. They have a variety of flavors and protein types, so you should be able to find something that suits you with them.
