Insulin Resistant Diet

Postby fitnessk » Thu Apr 26, 2012 10:02 pm

Has anyone used the insulin resistant diet even if they do not have insulin problems? I have known some people who have found this approach a good way to eat well and lose weight and then keep a good weight. It involves not eating too many foods with sugars and carbs.

I wouldn't call my diet an insulin resistant diet, but one of my main objectives is to raise insulin sensitivity and this is reflected in my diet. My carbohydrate intake is low and I don't eat grains or sugar. Insulin sensitivity is crucial if you want to lose fat.

Insulin is a hormone. I think of it as a shuttling hormone. It moves glucose into the body's cells. Insulin resistance is a relative condition in my opinion. I don't believe it's an all or nothing thing. IR is when the body does not respond quite as efficiently as it should to the secretion of insulin so the pancreas pumps out more.

Yes, but this is caused by triggering an insulin response frequently, lowering your insulin sensitivity, and eventually leading to insulin resistance. It is a shuttling hormone, it is good at shuttling energy into fat cells, it can even shuttle protein into fat cells.

I know several people who eat this way to lose weight, myself included! Not only does it help with my body, but it leads to a hormonal balance in my body, too. And, sorry if this is TMI, but it helps regulate my, uh, girls stuff.

Yeh I was figuring it helped with female things. The diet was suggested to me by my GYN in fact. It seems to be making me feel better even though I am not losing weight yet.

What exactly are the foods you would eat on an Insulin Resistant diet? I have heard of this type of plan before, but I wasn't sure of specific foods. I would be interested to know if someone could fill me in. :D

Primarily protein, vegetables and good fats. Foods which do not trigger an insulin response. Eating high protein, vegetables and good fats is a good lifestyle choice, I wouldn't view it as a diet.

Thanks for the response Shaun! You are right that protein, veggies and good fats are a good lifestyle choice anyways.
